Great location (few minutes walk from the station). Super friendly, polite and helpful staff (spoke English well and found other means of translating if something wasn’t clear). The building is a beautiful old Ryokan, which met all expectations and ideas of what a proper original ryokan would look like. We even got to try the private onsen (remember to book it in time!) and enjoyed time in the relaxation room. The food experience was just amazing!! We had the Japanese breakfast both mornings and for dinner we had the kaiseki the first night and shabu shabu the second night. The room was also big and beautiful, clean and when we came back from dinner our futon beds had been made. The whole stay from the entering the establishment to our check out will be a memory and experience we will not forget!

Combination of boutique hotel and ryokan, very comfortable stay in traditional Japanese room, lovely Onsen, delicious Japanese breakfast and wonderful staff. Great location near station, walk to old town and many restaurants, especially Sakurajaya ( 15 mins walk). Recommend booking for a wonderful meal that chef Hiroshi will create for you (see Lonely Planet review).
The hotel staff was very helpful and even bow when you walk past the staffs. There was 2 microbus per hour from the Takayama station to hotel. (5 minutes). The room (Japanese style room with tatami) was big enough for 2 people stay and very quiet. There was 2 onsens. A big one on the 1st floor and a smaller one in the basement. The breakfast had plenty of food, buffet style and you can choose to have western/Japanese meals.
A beautiful family-run ryokan. The room and location were ideal, the food was amazing, and the private onsen made it extra special. You absolutely must visit!!
The place was spacious, clean, perfectly located in the center of Magome-juku and had very nice futon beds. The host went above and beyond all our expectations. He mentioned that local restaurants were reserve only, and since we were already quite late, he offered to take us to a local public onsen were we could also have dinner. We had a nice simple dinner there, and a great onsen session afterwards. He brought us home afterwards, and had a good night's rest before our Nakasendo hike. Thank you!
Lovely traditional Japanese Ryokan with a lovely large and private onsens- we really liked the outdoor one.
Location, comfort of the futon and blanket, indoor and outdoor onsen, breakfast and… Hilda beef dinner (with sake tasting). Amazing experience!
Right on the Nakasendo trail before the main part of Magome. Beautiful property. Traditional Ryokan style with lovely tatami mat rooms. Very comfortable mattress/bedding. Food was very generous and delicious.
We stayed at Tajimaya to enjoy Magome without tourists. Futon beds were pretty thick and comfortable. Dinner was good, but we had better ones at other ryokan/minshuku. There is a good lunch cage just across the road, called Masuya.
Everything. Our room was spacious with beautiful views to the garden. It was our first time sleeping on futons and they were very comfortable. We were able to take a private family bath, which is amazing as I have a couple of tattoos and in some places I am not allowed to use the public baths. Also the traditional breakfast was delicious. Staff very nice and helpful.
Beautiful Japanese Inn! The room was spacious, and the futon was comfy enough to asleep. Free drinks available downstairs and for the breakfast. Onsen was small but well maintained. This Ryokan is old but the shower room and toilet were all renovated and super clean. Staffs are very kind!
