This year we had the pleasure of booking the apartment, which was really wonderful given our 2-year old's early bedtime (he can sleep in peace, and we can enjoy a glass of wine on the couch). We all looked forward every morning to the breakfast delivery, and the first day Joana brought our basket with the cake I loved the most from last year. This level of care makes you feel like you are staying with family and is why we want to come back again and again. The gardens are (still!) beautifully maintained (the gardener was very kind to our little one, and gave us a tour of the vegetable garden), and we really enjoyed the nightly dip in the hot tub while gazing up at the 1000-year old castle ruins. This place is truly magical, and Joana and her husband have the rare gift of exceptional hospitality - we will definitely be coming again next year!

Offering a terrace and spa centre, Akelarre is situated in San Sebastián, 5 km from Calle Mayor. There are 2 restaurants on site and one of them is awarded with 3 Michelin stars. The views were unbelievable, and the whole experience was extraordinary. I went for a two-day solo retreat and booked an additional three days. I would highly recommend going for a long walk all around the area. The hotel provided a map to go for a beautiful walk. I would also highly recommend booking a service in the spa. I rarely book hotel treatments because they are often overpriced, but the massage and facial were exceptional. Another tip is to try the local yoghurt with their forest honey for breakfast. I have travelled to many 5-star hotels, and I can't even put it in a comparable category. The food, amenities, service, people and property and attention to detail were exceptional. My last tip is to really enjoy the hotel, go for a walk, and enjoy the spa, and the pool is not for swimming but for pure relaxation with massage jets. There is a beautiful room at the spa to watch the ocean to mediation music, eat at their 3star restaurant and watch the unbelievable sunset.
