Copacabana
4.9 miles from city centre
Copacabana sizzles. This beach is a never-ending parade of lithe bodies playing soccer, volleyball, surfing or baking at 30 degrees. The crowds can get intense, so cool off with a Caipirinha (Brazil's national cocktail) in a welcoming ocean-side cafe. Drift further south for Copacabana Fort, which has been converted into an army museum.

Ipanema
5.9 miles from city centre
The residents of Ipanema live in palatial elegance along Rio's most staggering coastline. Walk barefoot on the beachfront along Vieira Souto, or head inland for choice local cafes and restaurants. At dusk, head to Arpoador: folks gather on the beach to clap their hands as the sun sets between two mountains. Stick around for sultry nightlife.

Centro
In the city centre
Visit Rio’s most vivid sights. Candelária Church calls Catholics to mass in a regal setting. Traverse Saara Market, a bazaar of epic proportions. History floats by as you walk along Rio Branco Avenue, with colonial-era buildings punctuated by skyscrapers. At the end is the art-deco CCBB and the opulent Theatro Municipal.

Barra da Tijuca
13.2 miles from city centre
‘Barra’ suffers considerably from new-build blandness, with high-rise apartments for as far as the eye can see. Most of the action is centred on the serene coastline along Lucio Costa Avenue, where you can surf, fly a kite or slurp on a ‘Caipirinha’. Nearby, Shopping Downtown and Barra Shopping Mall sell designer brands clothing.

Flamengo
2.2 miles from city centre
Flamengo’s Carmen Miranda Museum is dedicated to the 1940s Brazilian screen siren. Find bucolic bliss at Casa Rui Barbosa, a pink mansion once owned by statesman Rui Barbosa. Parque do Flamengo is a recreation zone, with sports, beach and fishing facilities. For an adventure, catch a cable car to Sugar Loaf Mountain for views of Botafogo Bay.

Leblon
6.4 miles from city centre
The body is a temple for Leblon’s taut citizens who decorate theirs with … very little. Work out on the beach with the muscle-bound descendants of gods, or laze with the locals. As one of Rio’s most affluent areas, high-end stores line the inland streets. Trendy clubs and restaurants inject new life after dark – just be prepared to spend!
Places to stay from £10 per night
Santa Teresa
1.4 miles from city centre
Santa Teresa’s aged mansions are frozen in time. Catch a streetcar on Carioca Aqueduct, pass along Largo dos Guimarães to last stop, Parque das Ruínas (Ruins Park), used for exhibitions and for gazing at Rio from above. When you tire of the 360-degree views, pace yourself and take the 250 colourful steps of Escadaria Selarón down to Lapa.

The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, as well as a thriving beach culture at Copacabana and Ipanema Beach. The city’s vibrant energy culminates in its carnivalesque nightlife, while the nearby mountains offer a quiet jungle retreat.
You can understand why many assume Rio de Janeiro to be Brazil’s capital when you experience the buzz of the city. Take the Cosme Velho cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain or admire the views from Christ the Redeemer before heading to Copacabana beach. Here, you’ll find locals playing beach football and sunbathing throughout the year. But perhaps the best time to visit Rio is in the weeks before Ash Wednesday – the time of the famous Rio Carnival. Alternatively, if samba isn’t your thing, Copacabana’s Bip Bip bar plays live bossa nova daily, while Bar Do Gomez serves ice-cold draught beers and the traditional sugarcane spirit known as cachaca.
The architecture of Rio often goes unnoticed but you’ll find many gems dotted around the city. Head to Largo de Boticano for neocolonial design or the 19th-century Parque Lage to gain a historical insight into old-time Brazil. The Museum of the Future highlights South America’s next generation of architects while the imposing Maracanã Stadium squeezes in over 100,000 football fans.

Nice city.
13 May 2024
Nice city. Has some nice location to chill out and take some photos. Nice weather, especially when the sun goes down. A lot of criminality. Everybody can tell you that they have been robbed, and us ourselves we got robbed too

The people we did interact with were very friendly but I've been told only about 2% of Brazilians speak English which seems out of character for a tourist destination. It did seem true, however, and I used iTranslate/Google translate to get by. Rio was the final port on a cruise so we did run into people we knew as we went around. My brother had been to a wedding here a year before so we also asked his opinion, he thought 2 days would be fine. Maybe another day though I was ready to go home by the time I left. I noticed on the tour aggregators (Expedia/Viator) there isn't much for English speakers beyond Christ Redeemer, SugarLoaf, hang gliding and favela tours. No general city overview tours, for example. We had been to beaches along the coast so didn't need that but I was told Ipanema Beach was better than Copa, the nightlife was more geared to tourists and a cleaner beach. I stayed in Santa Teresa but couldn't really get into the vibe not speaking the language. I found amazing things to do - loved MAR (museum) of Rio and the church at the monastery of Sao Bento. My sister and I did do a private city tour which included going to Christ Redeemer and anything else we wanted to do. We were picked up at the pier and dropped at our hotel. We had a driver and guide so luggage was safe and communication was simple. I didn't bring enough outlet adaptors for the many types of electrical sockets Brazil seems to have, fyi.

Rio de Janeiro is a wonderful city to visit . Sugar Loaf mountain cable car gives incredible views of the city and Christ the Redeemer was wonderful and there are many other places to visit close by. The national park was a morning trip that is highly recommended. We ate in local resturants both on the beach and one block back from the beach so many to choose from and all within easy walking distance. Prices reasonable - meal for 2 including wine varied between £25 -£40
Great area.

Great area. Walking distance to the beach. The employees were excellent. I just felt bad that they have to tell clients that the pool closes at 17:00. Too early as after getting back to the hotel after 17:00 I could not use the pool. Which has an amazing view.

10 days in this town is enough to visit all the interesting places and of course the Beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema .For me the best was the beach outside the town taking Metro to last station Jardim Botanico .The sand more white the water more clean not so much crowded and the prices much lower.Visiting the interestig places in the city quite easy I strogly recomend to go to Placa XV and use ferry boat to go to Paqueta island also to cross the Guanabara bay to Niteroi and find bar Imperio do Sabor with the best caipirinha and sardines served there.

Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city, full of life , plenty of nice restaurants an beaches. Is easy to move around as there are taxis services everywhere. Most of people in Rio are friendly and ready to help. Still a bit dangerous, so be careful with your belongings as mobile phones, jewellery etc... depending on the place like shopping centres there are lot of security, but not everywhere. For the rest is an amazing place to spend your holidays ;-)
