The big attraction for tourists to go to Palenque are the Mayan ruins nearby. The ruins are not that impressive. At the time of our visit, the area you could walk around was restricted to only the large buildings. Every few feet was a vendor selling all the same things as the neighbor vendor. This made it feel so commercialized and distracted from being able to enjoy the atmosphere of the ruins. Tikal blows this place away. The museum was pretty good. The town has a few shady blocks with some excellent restaurants in the tourist district, but the rest of the town is not all that special.
You can spend weeks in that region easily, because there are too many beautiful things to visit and do. Waterfalls, Maya ruins, hours and hours of hiking in the jungle is all possible and must do. Palenque and Chiapas state offers lifetime adventures. Can rental is essential as the public transport is not really safe for tourists.
if you go with your families, you need to choose hotels close to city and walking around of and especially in the cañana street it is a little place where you will find all kind the restaurants, coffee, and snacks bar. enjoys, cheers
We stayed one night in town to visit the ruins - had a good coffee - nice evening walk in the town - farmacies availeble The ruins of Palenque was beautifull, due to construction/care-taking we could nog visist al the temples. I was sick at the time, but there were enough toilets on inside and outside the domain. There is a second part more into the jungle where you can see more wild animals but my body was not up for that. As far as we could understand it does take a tour to do this second part.
I didn’t spend much time in the town, I was there for the ruins. Definitely take the tour though the jungle to see the ruins that are still covered with trees. Climb through the ancient Mayan Aqua duct, see the monkeys and try eating some termites. The whole experience in the jungle adds immensely to the site. My guide was Victor, he speaks Spanish and English, very knowledgeable, well worth the money.
Enjoyed visiting the ruins at Palenque, well worth seeing as they were in more of a tropical setting than some of the ruins we visited around Mexico City and it is still permitted to climb up to the top of some of the ruins. While visiting the ruins it was also possible to take a short jungle walk back down to the entrance. The town of Palenque itself was quite pretty with plenty of places to eat and the people were very friendly and helpful. We also took a trip out to Misal Ha and Agua Azul waterfalls which were interesting and fun as it is possible to swim in these areas.
