At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant. With Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica on its outskirts has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com ranges from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March you might just catch Fasnacht: Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to see it start though - 4am!
“Very cute medium size so if you are looking for something that is not big chain hotels then it would be perfect. Had some personal greeting, bottled water, candies etc waiting for you in your room. Close to everything, also they game me the public transport pass. Probably one of the best experience in my stay at sub-5 star hotels.”
“everything, a very, very good hotel, as a frequent traveler the standard”
“Very helpful and engeged staff, excellent location, marvelous room with view to the old city and the river Rhein, excellent breakfast buffet”
“This is a super classy hotel. It's a very old hotel so you get very nice feeling. The rooms are very big and beds are comfortable. There is coffee/tea making facility in hallway so that's convenient as well. Staff is helpful and they keep your baggage for free if you reach early or have a late flight.”
“I enjoyed the view; the room was comfortable and clean; enjoyed Nespresso in room!! Staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. Breakfast substantial. Location was excellent just across bridge to sights and shopping. Very easy navigation of city on public transportation.”
“At that weekend it was one of the cheapest hotels in Basel and I totally understand why. Great service and staff. And a lovely city to stay for a night. Surely reccommend it.”
“Location Breakfast included Complimentary passes for public transport”
“it was nice and comfortable stay with small children.”
“The positive, helpful attitude of every member of staff is exceptional. The rooms and beds are extremely comfortable. The location perfect for Airport as well as City. Internet free and unproblematic. Life is made easy and enjoyable!”
“Great location. Delicious breakfast. Reliable value.”
“The staff were excellent, the room was clean and modern, transportation was very close, several nice restaurants and stores, etc nearby. Very nice Continental breakfast included in the very reasonable price. All of the staff spoke excellent English, and we're very helpful in directing me to places I wanted to go. Great value for money. Heartily recommend this hotel to anyone who might ask...”
“Where do I start? We were there several nights so we saw many staff members and they were super friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious, the air conditioning worked well on very warm days, there were multiple outlets for charging personal devices. Not that the hotel is based in a poor area, but I noticed that their security, needing a key to operate lift and enter stairs was appreciated. The bed was extremely comfortable as were the pillows. The bathroom was well supplied with nice toiletries from France and the shower! Oh, the shower! I enjoyed the rain shower so much. Excellent location two blocks from the Altstadt (old town), a Coop around the corner for snacks & groceries, and St. Peter's Square is two blocks away--they have a flea market every Saturday that was fun for some local color. Convenient location to trams, you can get off at either Schifflande or Universitatspital. Their prices were the best in town the weekend of the Basel Tattoo, when many others raised their prices.”
“Lovely room, very clean. Friendly staff and walking distance to the town centre. Loved it and will definitely use again!”
“Clean, well furnished and friendly working staff. Very good location.”
“we had a very enjoyable stay, the staff were very helpful and friendly , the atmosphere very welcoming and I was happy to see such wide age range of guests.”
“On our first family holiday they provided a cot and offered lots of extras to make our stay comfortable. Free travel in basel, including to the airport and they even helped us order takeaway food! Excellent service, worthy of a 5 star hotel and good price for Basel.”
“Staff on reception and in the breakfast room extremely helpful and proactive. Hotel is on the square in front of the station and near the airport bus too; the Old Town is a pleasant 10min walk. Great choice of breakfast and high quality offerings. Fast wi-fi.”
“Exceptional staff - friendly, helpful, English speaking. Hotel close to river, Old Town, trolley and bus lines and excellent dining. Fifteen minute taxi ride to airport.”
“The hotel was very close to the center of the old town and next to St Peter's Church. The breakfast was nice and, although it seems expensive when you look at the price on booking.com, it's much cheaper than breakfast you can get anywhere else in Basel - especially on a Sunday morning!”
