At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant. With Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica on its outskirts has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com ranges from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March you might just catch Fasnacht: Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to see it start though - 4am!

“Staff Parking discount Free local transportation Location View Room Free WiFi”
“Lobby was beautiful and a great introduction to the hotel; staff was courteous and helpful; room was well-appointed (I especially liked the desk) and comfortable; nice view out the room; free mobility ticket was especially useful--we used it to tour the city, since there were no tour buses available on Good Friday.”
“The rooms were small but you expect that as this is an old hotel. They were very clean and had everything you needed. The location was superb, just a short walk across the bridge to old town Basel. The breakfast was great. The people were terrific as well. Would recommend to anyone.”
“The location is excellent. I was afraid it might be noisy being so close to the train station but I found it quiet. The breakfast was very nice and the staff was friendly and helpful.”

“The location was lovely. The breakfast was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful.”
“On our first family holiday they provided a cot and offered lots of extras to make our stay comfortable. Free travel in basel, including to the airport and they even helped us order takeaway food! Excellent service, worthy of a 5 star hotel and good price for Basel.”
“Staff on reception and in the breakfast room extremely helpful and proactive. Hotel is on the square in front of the station and near the airport bus too; the Old Town is a pleasant 10min walk. Great choice of breakfast and high quality offerings. Fast wi-fi.”
“Exceptional staff - friendly, helpful, English speaking. Hotel close to river, Old Town, trolley and bus lines and excellent dining. Fifteen minute taxi ride to airport.”
“The hotel was very close to the center of the old town and next to St Peter's Church. The breakfast was nice and, although it seems expensive when you look at the price on booking.com, it's much cheaper than breakfast you can get anywhere else in Basel - especially on a Sunday morning!”
