Only a 7-minute walk from Akakura Ski Resort, Hotel Taiko features indoor and outdoor public hot spring baths, massages and a sauna.
“The location of Hotel Taiko is perfect, restaurants and bars are within 10-200m walk, you can catch one of the frequent shuttle buses to the slopes or even walk if you have the energy - only takes 10-15 minutes to walk to the furthest away. We stayed in a Japanese style room, it was HUGE. Probably 90sqm, the view of the mountains was amazing from the room. It was room 511 I'd recommend it :) The outside onsen is amazing, going there after and before a day on the slopes is just way your body needs. Embrace the nudeness too! You'll see in other reviews the Hotel is dated etc, it is - and I have high standards about accomodation but Hotel Taikos location, view, onsen and comfort outweighs the fact it's a little run down. I read a previous review saying they wished it were closer to the slopes, any closer and you wouldn't have the view of all the mountains nor the convenience of the restaurants. Majority of the other guests were Japanese, as like the rest of Myoko which seriously makes the stay more enjoyable! Less tourists :D If you are a beginner boarder or skier (like me) i would 100% recommend getting lessons, they do English lessons at Myoko Sports which is about 150m from hotel Taiko, I booked in for a group lesson (max of 4) and ended up being the only one, so had two 2.5 hr lessons, after that I was up and down carving the slopes & falling about 95% less than when I tried it alone!”

“Very welcoming, comfortable and clean ski lodge. Jeff and Tania (and family) went out of their way to make sure that all their guests had a great holiday both at the lodge and on the slopes. They were knowledgeable about the area which helped us plan our day trips. The breakfast was great. The onsen was a real treat at the end of the day and the tatami rooms were very comfortable. The lodge has a relaxed feel and spacious common area perfect for families and larger groups. We felt we had been welcomed into the crew and had an awesome day riding with Jeff and some of the other guests. We would highly recommend and hope to get back there ourselves.”

“Michael and Tamami took great care of us, and made it feel like we were visiting old friends when we checked in and met them for the first time. They both speak great English for forgivers traveling to Japan, not to mention all the food Tamami made was awesome! From waiting at the train station for us to arrive late without phone service, to Tamami making my wife a laminated note in Japanese explaining her wheat allergy to show at restaurants for the rest of our trip. The lodge is very close and walkable from the Akakura resorts town, but located on a nice quiet side street.”

“We enjoyed our stay so much that we extended for 4 nights. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful, they couldn't do enough for us, from meeting us in the village when we arrived late at night so we wouldn't get lost, they also drove my husband to the hospital when he unfortunately fell ill, they even dug our car out of the snow the morning we were leaving before we realized. The accommodation is basic but very comfortable and excellent value. We had 4 of us (2 adults, 2 children) comfortably sharing the room and at our hosts suggestion we left the futons out during the day and used the large storage cupboards for our luggage. When we extended our stay we were moved to a larger room which was nice. There were toboggans and snowball makers for the kids to play with and a great little slope right out the front. The location is fantastic as it's ski in/out which is rare in this village. We were able to easily ski out in the morning and drop off the kids at the ski school (Myoko Snowsports) which I'd highly recommended, they were fantastic! At night it's an easy 5 minute walk to the restaurants and shops. Thank you very much to our hosts for a wonderful stay, we can't wait to return.”
