It was a very pretty village/ Town in the mountains. Suitable for walkers with lovely cafe's and restaurants and useful supply base before starting the camino. Local people were very friendly and quirky as well. It is full of character and history.

SJPDP is the traditional starting point for el Camino de Santiago's French route. You can feel all the positive energy and excitement from the Peregrinos at portas of their journey. Although the first stage from SJPDP, crossing the Pyrenees to Spain, is challenging the journey and the satisfaction of completing it is multiple times more rewarding and will remain as a memorable experience! There is surely more to do and see in Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port than we had time for. The Hotel Ramuntcho was perfect in every way. We were in town only for one night before beginning the Camino, and we would have been delighted to stay longer had time allowed.

We went to St Jean because it is the starting point of the French Camino. It is a charming place, lots of good places to stay and eat - though the prices in a cafe we stopped at are a lot higher than in nearby Spain! 5 Euros for a glass of wine compared with 1.5 Euros in Spain!

It’s beautiful little town in a beautiful setting.

It’s beautiful little town in a beautiful setting. Well, we ate one of the restaurants where we could sit outside. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten the name of the restaurant. The food was good. The restaurant was quite busy. I gave the cashier €50 and was short changed €20. 🤨

Beautiful town at the start of the Camino frances.

Beautiful town at the start of the Camino frances. Not good for dairy and gluten allergy though and not every restaurant and bar proprietor is friendly. Hardly anything provided in any language other than french. Looking forward to crossing into Spain.

The hosts were fantastic. They were very kind and organised the accommodation very well. They provided lockers for boots and rucksacks- no rucksacks in the dormitory- which makes complete sense- things are tidy and nobody is taking up too much space. The dormitory was not too crowded and the beds were comfortable. Shower areas are clean and ample. The sleeping area was quiet from 9.00-9.30. The dormitory overlooks quite a busy place but it was quiet when I visited.

Very nice host, helped me with organizing my first camino day, that I was very nervous for. He discussed the first stage with me (i have the tendency to develop inflammation on my foot after much exercise) and told me to try it. Originally I was planning to do only the first three stages, but I ended up doing the whole thing. Gite Bidean was a great place to start, I highly recommend this Albergue, nice encouraging host and very helpful with my worries.

The host accommodated our request to leave our bags there prior to the check in time. This was a big relief to us as we did not have to lug our bags around. The room was clean and spacious with spectacular views. The host, Pancho was very helpful in every way. We had left our phone charger behind in the previous hotel so he gave us an adapter to help.

The location couldn't be better, right in the center of town, but still pretty quiet. The friendliness of the staff is very nice as well. Very nice that the guy spoke English. There is waterboiler in the room, coffee and tea is supplied. Romantic atmosphere, if you like traditional French hotels, you are in the right spot.

It is a lovely albergue, with character and charm. Well situated near the pilgrim office and Express Bouricot. The dorm I slept in was spacious and had single beds - much appreciated. The dinner was delicious, and the multi-national guests were able to all communicate with the assistance of the hospitaleros.
