Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

    Apartament preciós en una ubicació perfecta per allotjar-se a Hvar. Està a 10 minuts del port caminant i té supermercats al costat. Habitació amb un balcó espectacular amb vistes al sunset. El seu propietari, Igor, és meravellós. Ens va recollir amb cotxe quan vam arribar a l’illa, ens va regalar begudes, ens va deixar tovalloles per anar a la platja i ens va fer recomanacions. A més, vam poder deixar les maletes a l’apartanent el dia que marxàvem. Un 10, si vas a Hvar, allotja’t aquí!

    L'apartament, de dimensions considerables per dues persones, no està al centre de Hvar (s'hi arriba en 10 minuts caminant) ni té vistes al mar (encara que és veu una mica de blau al fons), però està envoltat de verd. Tot molt net. El llit molt confortable. Molt bona dutxa. Bon funcionament del wifi. Possibilitat de deixar l'equipatge fins a l'hora de marxar de l'illa. Terrassa impressionant. Molt tranquil. Molt recomanable.

    Allotjament situat a 5-10min caminant del centre històric i del port de Hvar. Habitació correcte. La senyora de la casa viu a la planta baixa, i no entèn gaire l’anglès però és molt simpàtica i es fa entendre perfectament!!
