Having Coeliac disease is difficult for the sufferer, their loved ones and for catering staff, but I do expect restaurant staff to have a working knowledge of it, in order to advise guests to make safe choices. One staff member responded with 'that's just flour, isn't it?' This is not acceptable and I DID become ill from gluten that night. Having said that, I received a profuse apology from the person on reception, who passed this back to the kitchen.
I'd like to mention some really lovely staff members here who excelled themselves for their employers, and made our stay a wonderful experience: Stacy in reception, Caroline, who took such care of my dietary needs at breakfast, and Joan from the restaurant, who tried her hardest to help me, even though she knew little about Coeliac disease. Many other staff were great, too, but we didn't get their names: the bar staff were very pleasant, though they could not serve a Rosé wine by the glass (disappointment).
We would certainly stay here again…if they would have us
