The host was super nice, always there at your disposal to provide you anything you needed. The atmosphere in the hostel was very friendly for solo travellers, the chilling area was great for integrating with other travellers,organise family dinners and socialize overall. The rooms and the beds were very comfortable and clean. Compared to other hostels I stayed in Puerto Viejo I believe that Kalunai offers you everything you need and makes you feel like home.

If you have one of the two private rooms in the female dorm you have to go through the dorm to get inside your room.

Great place with a nice kitchen and only dorms of 4 Max (except 5 in the female dorm). The owner is nice and the staff too. Try their family diners. Loved the cats!!

The personnel very helpful and willing to provide any information. Especially Giannis was very friendly. If you are Greek like me, 1/1.000.000 I know, talk to him and you will be very surprised. Also very good and relaxing environment outside in the yard in the common areas. A full kitchen that could be shared by everyone

I had a lovely, relaxing time at this place. It was everything I needed and wanted from a hostel and very clean and homely. The staff member treated me very well and was very pleasant. I would highly recommend staying here and will definitely return.

When it rains, the place gets muddy and just walking to tour room could be a challenge, not to mention having to go to the smoking area. Beds were making a lot of noise with every move of each guest. The chile girl at morning shifts was a vibe killer. Not everyone can work with ppl. All in all it’s ok. Just not worth 21$ a night for dorms.

When it isn’t raining, the area with the chairs & hammock, being the only common area is nice to hang out. The guy at evening shift was very kind.

The hostel had a real chill vibe and it was so nice sitting in the main area, playing with the cute kittens :) the staff that worked in the hostel were so nice and created a friendly atmosphere. The location was good.

I guess out of most of the hostels it's positioning wasn't the most ideal but it was still amazing due to it being a 3 minute walk from the centre and 5 minute walk to the first beach

I loved the staff's friendliness and enjoyment they had in their jobs, which made the vibe really nice and fun, making the environment really nice to hang and meet with other people

Giannis and Gonzalo are excellent hosts and are there to help with anything you need. I felt welcomed as soon as I stepped through the gates! There are bikes to rent and a communal kitchen/ common area to chill (the kittens were a huge bonus) thank you so much!

Loud music played until 11pm, even when there was no hostel guests socialising, and you can't escape this noise where the dorm rooms are positioned. Dorm rooms cramped and extremely warm

Friendly staff, on the edge of town so no traffic noise but perfect walking distance, plenty bathrooms/showers all functional and clean, kitchen is great and they have coffee every morning

Lovely place, great location in Puerto Viejo (5 min walk to center), friendly atmosphere. Lots of bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, comfortable private room. Staff is the best, especially Gonzalo who does everything to make you feel comfortable. Highly recommended!

Location is a little set back but still only a few minutes walk to the main road

Gonzalo is an amazing host & the owner is lovely, really friendly workers that can’t do enough for you & even went for walks, played live music & managed to hitch a ride to the bus terminal when leaving! The communal areas are great, lots of hammocks, tables & chairs, large dining tables brings everyone together, kitchen big enough for lots of people to cook and not feel on top of each other, lots of games, free towels. I stayed in 4 different hostels during my few weeks in Puerto Viejo & definitely my favourite!
