To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

United KingdomAccommodation looks like a construction site or dump and the photo in the booking.com listing is very misleading. There was dust in some of the rooms and one of our party had to take antihistamine tablet. Threadbare towels were provided. No clear instructions to access key to house. It should have been clearer that access is not at no.14

NetherlandsThe appartement was really filthy, to mention a few things: - Sticky everything - Stains on the bed linnen - A lot of dust - One dish cloth but a very filthy one. - dishes in the cabinet where not clean - mold/mould in the bathroom - the refrigerator was ... I don't even have words for this just look at the pictures. The rest I will not even mention. I sent in four pictures to show you a bit Also we could hear the neighbours upstairs very loudly, (every step!), Maybe also because there where multiple cars coming and going when we where there. There was no fire alarm, there was one but without the battery in a drawer. We left early and did not sleep here because the ferry did have problems and we decided to drive trough Sweden. But we decided to go early so we did not have to sleep in this appartment. The owner responded a bit surprised why I changed the bed linnen again and said he was there before we came to check if the cleaning company had did a good job. I do not know which compagnie this must have been, but I am more concerned the owner just don't see the state his appartment is in. He stayed friendly though, we did too. Only this review I can't make better I am affraid.
The wood stove was nice. It was nice the owner arranged a last minute booking, because we needed to stay in Larvik longer then planned, (due to no ferry going).
