A wonderful rest place close to the first temples on the 88 pilgrimage. Everything is super well thought out, modern and yet full of tradition. It is intimate with 5 rooms and in an Meiji era home with a beautiful neighborhood of similar structures. The Italian restaurant several doors down is also excellent.

The foods were real good and you can feel the warm welcome from obaa-san. The dog there also cute even though he’s quite an old pup already. The place is really nice. quiet and full of nature, I wish I could stay more for like a whole week and do nothing. Futon and Kotatsu were also really comfortable.

Bit outdated but that’s exactly what you’ll get in the middle of nowhere. However, staff, food and hot spring is nice and nearby river is a good place to go for BBQ in summer. If you are looking for place where the time stops, this is where you want to go.

This ryokan is large house that is occupied by a Japanese family with small children, and they have set up a handful of guest rooms. That, in itself, is delightful to me. This town is about experiencing the old Japan, and that is also true with this house. The house has not been updated in a few decades, and the manual toilets are standard low-flush composting. I feel like I am experiencing Japan before its became a high-tech country. I value this experience, but if you need everything to be new and digital, this is not the place for you. Wi-fi is available in the common areas but I didn't have the signal in my room upstairs. The lovely walk from the train station takes about half an hour and is along the river and a bamboo grove, so it is quite enjoyable. The owner offered me a ride back. I was there in the middle of November and it was getting cold, since it's a drafty old house. The bed has a warm duvet and there is a heater in the room.

The room is big and can accommodate 4 people with 4 individual beds. It was cold when we arrived as it was raining all day, but the heater in the room brought it up to temperature very quick and we were very comfortable. Dinner consisted of a platter with vegies, beef, pork, and chicken and we cooked it outside with the provided gas BBQ in an enclosed table area. Dinner was delicious. Breakfast was provided in the restaurant within the bathhouse next door. After 8PM everyone leaves the area and you are on your own, with emergency phone numbers provided should something pop up. The bathroom is outside and is assigned to your tent, though nothing really stops someone from using it as it remains unlocked, but we never had any issues.
