The hotel has a lot of character, and the rooms were really nice - the beds were super comfy; we had such a comfortable stay here and we felt so welcome by the owner. We had a great evening drinking and talking later into the night, it was a great pleasure to meet him. The location makes it very walkable to the sights of Sakata and to the train station. There is a good number of excellent restaurants nearby also. Please, if you get an opportunity to visit Sakata you must stay at Hiyori Yama Hotel!

Check-in is easy, but only if you’re tech-savvy. The place is quiet and located away from the main area. Free coffee is provided. The toilets and shower rooms are very clean, and I didn’t have to wait as there weren’t many people around. There’s a park nearby where I saw lots of cherry blossoms.

The location is perfect. Staff is excellent. Futon bed is so comfortable.

Met the owner who was really friendly and spoke English well. He helped us with providing restaurant recommendations and calling in advance to confirm the restaurant was open before we visited. Also had a really nice dinner in the ryokan with a series of different seafood and meat dishes. Overall a great stay!

This place is something else - in a really, really positive way. It is cozy, quiet, clean, beautiful and helps you to relax as soon as you arrive. The rooms are spacious (even the smaller ones for 1 person), the hot bath is great and the breakfast is definitely worth a try since it is absolutely delicious. Sleeping on a tatami floor is a wonderful experience that I really enjoyed. The sightseeing spots of Sakata can be easily explored by foot. A supermarket is close by. In case if you aren't able to speak Japanese, do not worry. The manager of the place is fluent in English and will help you whenever you need anything. Besides that, the nice ladies at the reception are going to everything to help you - despite the language barrier. This place is really special, so don't miss it! I will most certainly return.
