An Island of Intrigue
The largest Italian island, Sicily has long been a place of mystery and intrigue, coveted by civilisations. Its Greek history is most evident at Agrigento whose UNESCO World Heritage-listed Valley of the Temples has amazingly well-preserved Greek temples.
Also important to Greece was Siracusa. Archimedes was born here and there is a theatre and necropolis to explore. However, the most spectacularly located Greek theatre is at Taormina. Set on a hill overlooking the glorious Mediterranean Sea, this theatre points towards Mount Etna smoking away in the distance above Catania.
