We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Omusubi guest house (JAPANESE STYLE） is a recently renovated guest house in Mamihara, where guests can make the most of its free bikes and garden. We stayed for 2 nights and we felt like home. This place is sweet and warm. The most beautiful thing is the community sense of this place, the owner’s beautiful smile and her willingness to share her love for her village.

43 km from Mount Aso, hostel+cafe たね is a recently renovated property situated in Hōgano and features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and private parking. Everything about my stay was amazing - the hosts were so lovely and hospitable (made me tea and breakfast, gifted me an umbrella, drove me to the bus station in the morning), and the room was great. Way bigger than a standard Japanese inn, and the bathroom had great amenities too. I enjoyed going to the local shrine, and sitting outside the hostel to enjoy the peaceful nature. I would love to stay again.
