Beyond cleanliness and comfort matching or exceeding hotels: nice decorations, free amenities (coffee, snacks, etc), and the nicest people! I also choose to add surfing lessons and it was a blast that topped off the end of my trip perfectly. There are bikes available to take around town and to the beach as well. Could not recommend more for those who want to enjoy the beach, or to really to anyone in the area!

Located in Gokase, 47 km from Mount Aso, Guesthouse EL CAMPO features a bar and views of the mountain. This guest house provides free private parking and bicycle parking. The location is excellent, the room is very cozy and clean. All the equiptment in the house are very modern and the beds are very comfortable too. This hotel is the best one we like during our travelling time. By the way, I like to thank Mr. Yagawa's help. If without him, We couldn't solve our car accident smoothly on that night. He drove 50 mins to meet us, and spent couple hours to communicate and translation for us with the towing and insurance company. We are very appreciated with his enthusiasm and help.

Set 29 km from Totoro-kō, Le Lodge Mimitsu offers a garden, and air-conditioned accommodation with a balcony and free WiFi. The room was well-equipped and the environment was peaceful. The host was also very warm and welcoming, a cheerful and sunny lady!

Located in Hyuga and only 24 km from Totoro-kō, Guesthouse ＆ Beach Cafe Fuego provides accommodation with sea views, free WiFi and free private parking. The guesthouse is so cozy and inviting, the family running the hostel is so sweet, and the food was delicious.

Located in Miyazaki, The Little Garden offers beachfront accommodation 1.4 km from Cape Iruka and provides various facilities, such as a garden and a shared lounge. The location and the views were spectacular, for such a low cost! I stayed in a twin room with ocean view - it was quiet and comfortable, and the owners were very helpful and kind.

Opened in April 2014 after a thorough renovation, this ryokan features spacious guest rooms surrounded by tranquil mountains. Really large rooms, with two baths - inside and outside - at perfect temperature 24 hours, so no need to wait for the bath to fill. Exquisite 10- course dinners. Walking distance to Takachiho shrine and town, a short drive to the boat pier or a 30 min walk (significant downhill to boats/uphill to hotel).

Featuring 5-star accommodation, Ryokan Shinsen is located in Takachiho, 600 metres from Takachiho Shrine and 1.8 km from Takachiho Gorge Freshwater Fish Aquarium. This was our favorite place in Kyushu. It is small and the attention to every detail is exceptional. The decor from the wallpapers to the tiles, and from the design of the onsen to the gardens are impeccable. The meals were also excellent. The hospitality of the staff, in particular Kumi-San and Megumi-San, was also a highlight.

Situated in Hyuga, 27 km from Totoro-kō and 38 km from Saitobaru Tomb, Mimitsu Lounge CASAKURA offers a garden and air conditioning. A hot tub is available for guests. Lovely little home in Mimitsu, well stocked and super comfortable. We used the hot tub which was great. The bed was so comfortable, we had a great sleep. The place is decorated very well, it's really homely but also modern.

Offering free WiFi and free private parking, The triangle hub Miyazaki is located in Miyazaki, within just 1.4 km of Miyazaki Station. This is the best apartment that I have stayed in my 2-week vacation in Kyushu. Unfortunately, we only stayed 1 night (original was 2 nights) as our flight from Yakushima island was cancelled due to bad weather. Rather than flying, we took the Toppy jetfoil. Host was kind enough to adjust our stay from 2 nights to 1 night. This place has everything and better amenities/facilities than hotels. Very good experience.
