Set 1.7 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Onyado Nono Matsue Natural Hot Spring offers 4-star accommodation in Matsue and has a spa and wellness centre. The mattress and pillows were extremely comfortable, so I slept like a baby every single night. The room was also super nice with the tatami flooring. Very cosy. Actually the whole place feels cosy and helps relax. The free half ramen every evening was also a very nice touch. Also this hotel is very conveniently located: it's close to Matsue Castle, close to the Shimano Art Museum, close to locations where you can take beautiful pictures of the sun setting on lake Shinji, close to ferry terminals to go on lake Shinji, close to Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station from where you can take the local Ichibata trains to places like Izumo or Matsue Vogel Park.

Kana and Himeka are the most charming and friendly hosts and welcomed us with delicious cups of tea. They showed us to our beautiful room which was elegantly furnished in traditional Japanese style with thick futon beds and fluffy duvets. Tea making facilities are provided. Our room looked out on a lovely traditional Japanese garden. The toilet and bathrooms are comfortable and clean. Breakfast was delicious and served in the atmospheric attached cafe. The guest house is a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building. Most highly recommended.

Situated in Masuda, 600 metres from Mochiishi Beach, ゲストハウス＆カフェ ハレテル features accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. Loveliest hosts ever, stayed late so they could check us in, gave us complimentary coffees the next morning, recommendations of things to do & places to eat. Rooms were excellent, we had four people, two in dorms two in single rooms, both were great, clean & cozy. Location is unbeatable, on the beach with a gorgeous view. Price was great for all rooms.

Featuring 4-star accommodation, Inishie no Yado Keiun is located in Izumo, 2.3 km from Inasa Beach and 400 metres from Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo. Clean, quiet, great food, staff very friendly and helpful. The bed was very comfortable, I loved the onsen in our room, and the self grinding coffee was excellent, beautifully decorated.

Set just 5.2 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, ゲストハウス あずも GuestHouse AZMO features accommodation in Matsue with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as a shared kitchen. The house was super clean and comfortable. It is clear it is well maintained. The host is amazing!! We had great conversations and he was helpful with everything we needed. He even helped us with transportation when we got stuck. Trully recomend when visiting the area, you will nit regret it!

Set in Matsue, less than 1 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, 喜庵 KIAN the guest house by the castle has a garden, private parking and rooms with free WiFi access. This is the perfect place to stay in Matsue. Great value, great place and a wonderful host. If both rooms are available, see item 3 below re the difference. Tip: it's worth spending 5 mins reading the helpful suggestions from other guests in the guestbook. 1. Location - excellent, central and walking distant from restaurants and bars, while being in a quiet location. If you're coming from the JR train/JR bus terminal, you'll need to take a bus (or taxi). Note that as at Dec 2025, Google unhelpfully doesn't tell you which of the many bus stops you need to catch your bus from - however, Navitime does. 2. Host - Emi is a proactive and welcoming host. She checked on us regularly and is bilingual in English so we had some lovely conversations. Her suggestions and those of her previous guests in her guestbook allowed us to have a really full and interesting 2 days based in Matsue. This included great bar/restaurant suggestions - Cafe Puente quite rightly comes up in many people's suggestions. 3. Rooms - there are two. The larger ones is upstairs, however for two people we found the downstairs one just fine. We decided to stay in the smaller downstairs room because we didn't want to go up and down the stairs. However, there were no other guests during the time we stayed. Note that the downstairs room is where the kitchen, showers and entrance area are. The upstairs room is more insulated and probably quieter if both rooms are occupied. However, while we stayed during mid-December, thanks to the heating on timers in the room and the kitchen, it was never too cold. 4. Facilities - we had breakfast in the kitchen and found it to be perfectly equipped for our needs. There are two bathrooms (each with a shower and toilet), which means that even if both rooms are occupied, there would always be a shower and toilet available for each room. The shower had good pressure and temperature.

Set in Yasugi, 26 km from Mizuki Shigeru Road, Shokinkan offers rooms with air conditioning and free WiFi. Very very nice typical Japanese ryokan remotely located next to a temple : amazing setting! The dinners and breakfasts were outstanding. The first dinner was fully veggie (pilgrim requirement perhaps) and delicious, then they asked us if we eat fish and meat, then had also fish and meat dishes. The ryokan-keepers were so kind and helpful to help us locate the place. Because, it is very remote and GPS coordinates not that accurate.

Situated in Matsue in the Shimane region, with Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum nearby, Ohashikan provides accommodation with access to a hot spring bath. The room was spacious, clean and staff were very attentive to details.
