Situated just 29 km from Kenrokuen Garden, 杜人舎 Morito-Sha offers accommodation in Nanto with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as full-day security. We had a traditional Japanese breakfast. Coffee was available before breakfast. The location was excellent, in the town and attached to the shrine complex. We were able to observe the morning prayers at 6:30 AM at the shrine, next door to the ryokan. In the evening we drove to the Sakurgaike public onsen on the edge of Johana for a good soak. Our hostess Mariko was awesome. She oriented us to Johana and told us about how the rykoan came into being from its former role as the dormitory for the monks. (Worth mentioning that there is a also decent tourist office at the train station in Johana). Markiko also made restaurant reservations for us, which would haven us much longer. Johana is worth touring on foot. We missed out on the float museum here by timing, but it appears to be worth a visit. We used Johana as a our jumping-off point to visit Gokoyama and Ainokura, two gassho villages south of Johana by about 30 minutes. Pro tip: make sure to visit Gokoyama and Ainokura if time permits; Shirakawa-go can be very busy and you'll see everything in these small villages, including interpretive exhibits in English. Shirakawa-go gets may more bus tours that the two towns mentioned here. Gokoyama and Ainokura are also closer to Johana. If you have the transport, you can also stop at the Iwase House, just south of Gokoyama, where the husband and wife are incredibly welcoming, speak excellent English and can give you a tour of one of the great homes in the area, once visited by the Emperor and more recently also by the Crown Prince.

GOKAYAMA BASE features mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking, located in Nanto, 44 km from Kanazawa Castle. The owner picked us up from a light up event because there was no bus connection so late at night. Saved us quite a lot of walking. Great value for money in a good location. The kitchen was well equipped as well.

Guesthouse Iwase is set in Toyama, 2.2 km from Toyama-kō and 14 km from Toyama Family Park. Very friendly and helpful owner. Not far from Higashi-Iwase tram line. Beds are comfortable and private. Bike, toothbrush, and towel rental available.

Located in Nanto, 31 km from Kanazawa Castle, Guesthouse Kazura provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking and a shared lounge. This 3-star hostel offers a shared kitchen and free... You have your own space in the dormitory with tatami mats and it’s very close to a tattoo-friendly onsen, bus station and to a lake. The owner and the staff was friendly! There are not many people in the guesthouse, so it’s a really nice place to calm down.

Providing mountain views, Tengudaira Mountain Lodge in Tateyama provides accommodation, a shared lounge and a restaurant. The lodge offers a continental or American breakfast. What a gem of a mountain hut! For us it was the perfect base for hiking Mt Tateyama. Dinner and breakfast were included and delicious. Comfortable room, absolutely lovely staff who made sure we had rain gear when a cold front was forecast. 100% recommend and we would love to go back!

Honestly, one of the best experiences in Japan as the owner is extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was also delicious!

Situated 43 km from Kenrokuen Garden, 25 km from Shirakawago and 45 km from Myoryuji - Ninja Temple, Minshuku Goyomon features accommodation located in Nanto. The hostess was amazing, and the village was picturesque.

Minshuku Yomoshirou is located in Nanto, 43 km from Kenrokuen Garden, 25 km from Shirakawago, as well as 45 km from Myoryuji - Ninja Temple. The owerners are a couple. They are very nice and helpful. I needed to get the train early in the morning the next day. They helped me reserve a taxi and reschedule the breakfast at 7:15 am so that I could leave on time. I am moved by their great hospitality and friendliness. Highly recommend others to visit here.
