I am 73 years old, my grandson agreed to the trip with me because I just didn't know what to expect. I had ancestors perish on a shipwreck in the area in 1890, so I wanted to visit Thursday Island and view the memorial, which I did. But there is so much more. Next time I will stay longer and take advantage of more ferry trips to the islands and Cape York. Horn Island itself is pretty basic, but it seems the whole island eats at the restaurant, which is very multicultural. Staff, locals, tourists, and visiting scientists, medicos and tradies. Not only is the whole area steeped in past history, but future history is being created daily.
We stayed on Horn Island at the end of our trip having spent 8 nights on Thursday Island. We thought that Horn Island might be worth a short stay in order to do the tour of the Torres Strait Heritage Museum and the other war history sites dotted around the island. It is also where the airport is located so it seemed logical to end our journey there before the flight back to Cairns and our points of origin. If we had our time over, we would not have stayed on Horn Island but rather caught the ferry over from Thursday Island and done the tour and then returned to Thursday Island. The ferry ride is ten minutes each way. Or perhaps caught the ferry over, done the tour and stayed one night only before the flight back to Cairns.
