Not everything was open over the Easter weekend. The hoochery and sandalwood factory are lovely places to eat and pick up some local purchases. The Pumphouse is amazing for a sunset drink and dinner. We went on pizza and tapas night and was fab. Went for brekky as well. Food always good
Kununarra has many beautiful landscapes to explore. The shopping is adequate for a remote location. The big draw card is the fabulous lakes and natural beauty surrounding the town. The sunset bbq cruise by Kununarra Lake Cruise Co is highly recommended!! The town has a safe and traveler friendly ambience.
Visitors information centre were very helpful. Close to Wyndham which was nice to visit. We visited the Sandalwood factory, Hoochery - home made rum - $5 for tasting paddle. Ord Metal art was good to visit. Scott was very friendly, informative and items were affordable. Across the road was a zebra rock showroom. We visited the Country Club for lunch which as very nice and the Kununurra Hotel for dinner. The meals were good and reasonably priced and the service was good. The Pumphouse was an interesting place for dinner.
Kununarra is a pleasant, friendly, picturesque and peaceful location. The surrounding waterways and national parks are pristine, stunning and tourist friendly. The town itself has everything a traveller might need and prices are reasonable. The town has a nice ambience and being able to swim, water-ski, fish and just enjoy the water without fear of being lunch for a crocodile makes the town a welcome oasis. Parking, shopping, eateries and natural beauty are all easy to find and navigate. There is enough history and pioneering spirit to make the town very interesting. I can highly recommend the sunset bbq cruise with Kununarra cruises...simply stunning cruise, beautiful dinner with drinks and great value for money. You must also visit the Ord river Dam...and stay a night or two at the world class resort park. 'The Hoochery' Rum distillery for lunch and rum tasting is a fabulous 'must do' and don't forget to stock up on wonderful Sandlewood products. I can't wait to get back there again...Kununarra will definitely leave a good impression and wonderful experiences.
Kununurra has a lot to offer anyone who is fortunate to visit - it is where the mighty Ord River has been harnessed for irrigation but its irrigation canals tree lined streets are at odds with the rugged beauty of surrounding country. There is abundant wildlife in this land of dramatic seasonal change, . The Kimberley is a powerful place and Aboriginal culture is strong in the region. Waringarri Arts is a Mirrawong art centre right in town and there several other Art centres further to the West including Warmun Art Centre, Turkey Creek and Yarliyil Arts in Halls Creek. Kununurra is the gateway to several great road trips including the Gibb River Road to Derby or the Mitchell Plateaux. Wilderness is not far away but watching sunset while having a meal at the Pump House on Lake Argyle is also a truly memorable experience.
There is not much to do in the town itself but it is a great base for tours. We were only there for 2 nights and would haveliked longer. We filled in a morning looking at some of the excellent art galleries and strolling near the Lily (?) town lake and CelebritybPark. We had a 1 day tour with Kingfisher Tours that included a 2 hour light plane flight over the Bungle Bungles and a 4wheel drive and walking tour through the Bungles and Cathedral. Would thoroughly recommend. It seemed expensive but when we finished the trip my husband and I both agreed that it was excellent value for money. The Argyle Diamond Mine has started doing tours. We would have liked time to do that and also the day trip to Lake Argyle...a good excuse to return!
