A nice beach town which has most conveniences but is not too big. We had visited in 1988 so the development since then was breathtaking. We visited during the off-season (October) so it was very rainy but had clear periods each day. The advantage to visiting this time of year is hotel prices are generally lower, but many businesses are closed so for example a restaurant you wanted to visit may not be open and I had more difficulty renting a good surfboard than I thought I would. As mentioned before, the rain can be a problem during the off-season but I understand the period from December to April is mostly rain free. I would imagine the town is much more crowded in season which could affect the experience.

We loved the location we stayed in - it was perfect for the two of us.
Besides buying fruit from the road vendors, and having local street food whenever spotted in La Garza, we ate at Rosi's Soda Tica in Nosara, and Soda la Peria in Samara.
Getting around Garza was pleasant as everything is walking distance.
If you want tranquility, low maintenance and somewhat self-sustainability, Playa Garaza may be the place for you.

San Juanillo is not a surf destination and thus not very touristic. It does have a small but well stocked supermarket and a couple of decent restaurants. We ate frequently at "Bar el Jardin" and "Soda Brisas del Mar", where service and food was always very enjoyable.
The two white sand beaches are beautiful and the sunsets were fantastic every single time.

Playa Azul is a hidden gem of a resort.
Playa Azul is a hidden gem of a resort. I booked it at the last minute as I had a few more days to stay in Costa Rica. We came from the bustling town of Tamarindo via the coastal route (which was mostly small unmaintained dirt roads) through Playa Avellanas where we stopped at the famous Lola’s for lunch.
Playa Azul is just the perfect place to relax and unwind. The location is secluded and feels exclusive. The rooms are incredible and you are steps from the beach. If you book the ocean view rooms you can watch and listen to the waves from the hammock on your balcony. There are geckos and iguanas all over the property.
Despite the remote location, there are two restaurants on site that serve decent food throughout the day. The staff were all wonderful and booked several excursions for us which were highlights of our trip.
The hotel is 10-15 minutes from San Juanillo and Marbella. San Juanillo is a tiny village but it boasts one of the most incredible beaches I’ve ever visited. Also, the “food truck” in town served some of the best patacones, burritos, and empanadas ever. Restaurant Cocobolo across the street also had great food and beers, plus an incredible view of the ocean.
If you head the other way toward Marbella, Soda Victoria is worth checking out too.
Highly recommend this place. We will be back.

Great town great beach.
Great town great beach. Good supermarkets and friendly people in general. We met some locals through some friends and we were made to feel at home quite quickly. Nice place.
Go to the Burger Window, (Google it) its in an open bar which has a few other eating stalls as well. A great curry shack too. But the burgers at Burger Window really are SUPERB. The service is quite non committal. There are few smiles and you can get put off by that. But listen, the burgers are worth the grief. Also try the crepes both savory and sweet at the little Ahora Si shop and then try the big Ahora Si restaurant further up the street. Both owned by the same family. Both very good choices. Ask for Antonio at the little Ahora Si crepe place

Nosara is apparently one of the most expensive places in Central America, more expensive than the rest of Costa Rica, and the vibe is a bit weird - lots of wealthy travelers, $9 drip coffee, middle-aged white people mostly and lots of second-home mansions. We went to yoga at a resort that was $600/night and that seemed like no big deal for most of the American clients. However once we got to know the locals, learned to eat at local "sodas" instead, and realized the beach break is fantastic for surfing and protected so there's no beach vendors or beach bars, we had a great time. It's not a backpackers town, but it is very safe.

Garza is a very quiet beach that serves as the launching point for most fishing trips in the area. It was fascinating to watch the small tenders moving people back and forth to the fishing boats and catamarans. There are two stores off the highway and several restaurants ranging from a high end, overpriced place to several soda ticas serving typical Costa Rican food of rice, black beans, salad and protein (fish, chicken or beef).

If you're looking for an 'out of the way' place to stay and relax, you can't do better than this place. The pool is fabulous and has a swim up bar, and both restaurants had excellent food. The grounds were beautiful and well kept, and the staff was absolutely fabulous, even calling us by our first names by the second day. The room was very comfortable, the bed was great, the shower was superb (good water pressure) and the A/C worked like a charm on those humid, overcast days.

Samara is a very cool, beachy surf village.
Samara is a very cool, beachy surf village. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. There are several gorgeous beaches in very close proximity. My favs were Samara and Carillo. Roots in an incredible bakery and there are many yummy restaurants to dine at. We loved the Olas Beach Baron, Ahora (Italian), Gusto and the stone-baked pizza venue close to the beach!

Choose accomodation carefully as the area is quite large and spread out. Not as devloped as other places along the coast.
Beaches are amazing and quieter than Tarmarindo or Samara beaches. Bring ypur own. Loungers and beach umbrellas, as limited availability. Also not too many places serving refreshments So bring your own.
