I uaed to live here, so the main purpose of my trip was visiting friends. What I like about the city is that it offers excellent shopping, great museums, and a wide variety of top quality ethnic restaurants that are amazing value for money as well as haute cuisine. The music scene is also really awesome from opera in the Nationaltheater to jazz in the Alte Feuerwache and many more more smaller venues offering great variety.
I didn’t get to stay at hotel as unable to travel owing to coronavirus. I was hoping the hotel would either refund all or some or my money or postpone the room to a later date given the extenuating circumstances. The hotel have refused any refund, which I feel is very mean. I am on limited income and has left me short of money in these dire times.
Not there long enough but what I did see I would go back for longer , great bars and restaurants, railway station will take you to other parts of Germany at reasonable prices, you can always find something to do.
Mannheim is a pretty interesting city regarding the structure and buildings. You can just walk along the central streets and you will find something interesting along the way. Otherwise, there is not very much. Just the University (the castle) and the water tower. What I found pretty interesting was "little Istanbul." A district with a lot of Arabic and Turkish shops, where you can advance your culinary knowledge and drink a nice chai.
Mannheim seems to get a bad rep on the internet. However, look beyond some of the buildings and there is a surprising amount to see and do. It is definitely somewhere you could enjoy a long weekend and feel you've had value for money.
Mannheim right now is very dirty-- construction is mostly everywhere, trash all over the streets, it's very gritty. There are some very beautiful monuments/sculptures, yes, but also strewn with litter and dust. The trams are often delayed with infrequent service, and the boards and screens where updates would usually be posted are completely bare, as if someone just took them down. It takes a long time to get from one part of the city to another. People often don't obey the cross-walk signals, overall, the city feels like it has forgotten itself, or worse, that perhaps they were forgotten by the government? That said, the stadtteil Jungbusch is really fun, and, the city hosts the Maifeld Derby, an indie music festival-- those two things, combined with staying at the Niu Square, make coming to Mannheim worth it. The people themselves seem really cool.
