I was pleasantly surprised on arriving to find Hondarribia has a beautifully preserved and characterful old walled town perched on a hill. Streets are cobbled and an afternoon or evening exploring the narrow streets and old alleyways with overarching houses is a very pleasant way to spend a few hours. The town at the foot of the hill is also very attractive with a fishermans' village of colourful houses. Hondarribia looks across the estuary to Hendaye in France: a fifteen minute ferry ride (fare 2.60 euros) gives access to Hendaye's beautiful mile long beach and clear shallow water ideal for families. Hondarribia also has pleasant beaches, kayaking and short cruises around the bay. Hondarribia offers a quiet, relaxed alternative to the busier towns on the Spanish coast but for a livelier day out San Sebastian is just 20 km away and easy to reach by frequent bus and train services.

Hendaye really exceeded my expectations.
Hendaye really exceeded my expectations. The beach was not crowded, and was very long. I don't usually go to beach at all in Europe as beaches in Australia are superior. I don't like crowded beaches. Overall, I would love to come back. I would definitely stay in the same hotel.

A beautiful hill village ideal for walkers - very quiet, we didn't see any shops in the village though so car required. Very convenient for the motorway France/Spain.
Not many places to eat when we were there in late April. We ate in our hotel - Les Jardins de Bakea which was FANTASTIC! Just superb.

Very welcoming and helpful staff. Clean room and comfortable bed on the ground floor. Pleasant restaurant area and good service. We would have liked a variety of fish on the menu; standard food, but good value. Very good for a one night stay, travelling home to the UK.

I could have stayed for weeks just looking at the waves rolling in. The food was delicious! Txirimiri was a star in Hendaye and Itxaropena in Hondaribbia. The people speaking a mixture of French and Spanish. The proximity of Spain and the ease of taking the ferry. Will definitely return.

Lovely, long beach.
Lovely, long beach. Quieter than St Jean de Luz, but still with a good choice of small restaurants, often specialising in fish/seafood.
Good public transport links, not expensive, to be able to visit other nearby villages and towns of the Basque Country
Lovely walk up over the headland, or instead -a little stroll along the promenade.
Visited Hondaribbia in Spain by a very short boat trip that leaves from Hendaye port. Beautiful little village-nice pintxos in the restaurants ! And good view from up by the castle.
The historic little train de la Rhune up the mountainside not to be missed-but book ahead-it gets full.
The chateau d’Abbadia is interesting.
