We only stayed for one night and that was just enough time. We parked in La Linea in the morning and paid for 24 hour overnight parking. We then walked across the border and took a bus to city center and then another public bus to The Rock Hotel. It was easy and inexpensive, no need for a taxi. We walked to the cable car from the hotel, there was a long line so we met some other people and shared the cost of a small tour van to the top of the rock. Very wise choice, we also stopped and toured the cave which was fantastic. Afterwards we walked all through the town, stayed overnight, perfect for one full day.
The kids loved the monkeys, we took a taxi tour and the driver was well known to the little chaps and he showed us how to get the monkeys to sit on us. All taxis are 7 seater which was great for our party of 6 For truely wonderful steak try Gauchos- amazing place and amazing food
A piece of England in better climate. You have a little bit of architecture, food, English accent, and unfortunately a cost of living. Getting around is very easy, but parking a car is expensive and time consuming. The main attraction is The Rock. You can do it in a cable car or by foot. By foot is cheaper but challenging. If you like to spend time on a beach it is not a place for you. 40 min away is Algeciras. You can take a ferry to Ceuta, Spanish city in Africa, and see Gibraltar from the other side.
As others have mentioned, like a time warp to an English port town in the 70s. Old musty pubs, M&S on the High St., traffic, old English people complaining about the weather. We enjoyed all of it! Can see almost everything in a weekend; best experience is of course taking the cable car up the rock and walking down via the various sites. Note the warnings about the apes-they will jump on your backpack and unzip it if you have it on your back rather than in front-we saw it happen multiple times.
The town is not really much to look at when compared with the Spanish cities of Andalucia next door. But the rock of Gibraltar is unique and worth exploring - just be prepared for some serious slopes - or take a bus tour.
One needs to be aware that getting to Gibraltar is not so easy if going by ground. The bus and the taxis do not cross the border, so need to walk from the bus station, cross the border and then try to find a taxi in Gibraltar or just walk. We arrived about 10 pm and luckily someone passed by and offered us a ride to our hotel!! Now, that we know, it would be easier next time. We were rescued by Good Samaritans more than once. The city itself is pretty small and isolated, but interesting and beautiful. We walked up too the Moorish Castle, then took in some of the ancient tunnels into the mountain, very unique. If the weather had been bad, would not have been much fun. The city pretty much closes up in the evening, so might be pretty boring for some, especially for kids.
