Staying at Holmen Husky is an experience far away from staying at an ordinary hotel. We want our guests to get closer to nature and to get a taste of what it is like to live close to the elements. We loved the cosy room and the fire, the view was lovely, all the staff were super helpful and friendly and went out of there way to help us and to make sure we had an amazing time. We loved spending time with the dogs and the husky sledding they do was brilliant, we even had puppy cuddles afterwards. The tepees are very comfy and lovely to wake up to, we also spent a lot of time in the communal lounge area and the bath house with big windows, the toilet huts are heated so we didn’t mind leaving the tepee to use the toilets as they were only a few meters away. We used the big tepee to cook over the fire, we really enjoyed this, but Alta is not far of you prefer not to cook. Hot chocolate on tap and breakfast included. We loved it here!

We visited the Sorrisniva Ice Hotel and stayed there one night. Wow, what a fantastic place. There was far more to impress us than we could see from the website photos when we booked. The dinner we had in the dining room there was superb. We also did a snowmobile safari with the hotel which was excellent. The 2 hour 35km trip was interesting and really fun. We also have a reindeer drawn sleigh ride and Sami experience which we also really enjoyed. A hot-tub out in the snow was also fun. While in Alta, we also did a dog-sledding ride, which was great fun and quite interesting, learning about the dogs. The weather wasn't conducive to seeing any Northern Lights (overcast and snowy), but we had such a great weekend, that we didn't mind. A good excuse to go to Northern Norway again in the future.
Alta is a nature driven town with lots of outdoor scenery. The acitivities in month of winters can be limited due to museum closures, but you can on a great day see most unbelievable northern lights right here in Alta
There are many grocery shops some of which are very large. We could find gluten free food The views of the mountains and bay are very nice when it’s sunny The rock carvings museum is definitely a place to visit I recommend the Vanvitting Grill for the excellent raindeer burger with strawberry sauce
Be sure to p pick the right time of year. The summer season is very short and several museums and other places close at the end of August. September we found to be relatively fine as well as October. We found that some places were closed whether this was because of the end of season or still related to Covid is/was uncertain. Alta Museum and its rock drawings and other Sami history is very interesting and informative. The Northern Lights (Nordlys) Cathedral stands dominant in the centre of town and well worth a visit. Obviously at this particular tie of year the Northern Lights are always a possibility.
Alta is beautiful!!! Planning our next trip already. We went to Holmen Husky Lodge and Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, we would go here again. Saw the northern lights and the Husky race Finnmarksløpet - great experience
Alta was really beautiful. I loved that there were walking paths everywhere so you could just wander around and appreciate the snow and scenery. Northern lights were visible every night! I didn’t like that the whole city revolves around tours. You can’t just rent snowshoes or cross country skis or a fat tire bike and go out on your own - everything has to be in a tour, which is very expensive and unnecessary if you have done these activities before. I enjoyed walking around at the university and through the neighborhoods, which was free and interesting. I also found the bus system very hard to use. There wasn’t a route map so it was really hard to figure out how to use transit to get where you wanted to go. I think having your own car is the way to go unless you plan to just take all the tours. Holmen Husky Lodge was hands down our favorite activity and place to stay. We did the sled ride and overnight stay in a teepee and it was amazing. Sorrisniva Igloo hotel is hard to get to if you aren’t staying there, but really spectacular and worth a visit. We rented a car for the day to go there.
