Positives - Remote secluded island off of Isla Colon which offers a lot of privacy. It's a great place to unwind and relax. Plenty of hiking trails to get around, otherwise not really any infrastructure Negatives - Because it's remote, you do have to pay for water taxis to take you around. Be prepared to bring cash with you so you can pay the drivers.
The little island is kinda sad when you walk through the village and see the poverty. While this is a bummer, it made me realize what's really important in life. The people here are friendly and happy. The walk around to the beach is the perfect chance to watch the surfers, listen to the children laughing and take a moment to reflect on life back at home. Look in the trees for the monkeys and don't forget the sunblock when you body surf! Life is simple here, beautiful too.
It's a tiny island with no roads, but a beautiful walk to the the swimming / surfing beaches. It's a $1 water taxi ride to Bocas Town which takes a couple of minutes. You do have to walk through where the locals live and it makes you realize how poor of a country it is. The trash everywhere (only where the locals live) is a bit disturbing, but seeing the children playing and having an awesome life albeit poorer than what we are used to was nice. Lots of dogs, chickens, and the occasional parrot. The best part: NO MOSQUITOS! Seriously! I was shocked not one! But there are some terrible 'noseeums' but a little bit of coconut oil makes them leave you alone.
The island itself had a lot of trash scattered at the shores. We were informed that it was unsafe to walk around the island as we had hoped. We are a mature couple, but it seemed that most of the people staying on the island were young surfers that would party all night. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and it was probably a great place for them.
The island was close enough to bocas for restaurants, etc and we were able to escape the commotion of bocas. One side of the island has better water for swimming. The area where the locals live was pretty dismal. Although there are a number of beautiful large homes beachfront. This island does not have 5 star accommodations if that is what you need. Very easy to get around the island with water taxis. Take a walk around the island and watch the surfers.
It is a great place to stay. Although some places are not as clean as desired. Specially between local houses because there is too much trash around. There are many places to stay for all levels. Playa Carenero is nice. Snorkeling can be done there. Also is a nice spot for surfing at the back of the island. Very safe place to stay. So close to Isla Colon without the crows!
