The people aren't as friendly here as they were in other places in Portugal. Tourists are a nuisance to the locals which is evidenced in the customer service. We went to the tourist information center and had the good fortune to attend a guitar recital by Joao Cano ( sorry about the spelling). He was FABULOUS and clearly explained Fado music. This made our trip to Faro redeeming.
The town was not overstuffed with tourists and vendors on the street so you really get the chance to see the buildings and the streets as they are, and it is quiet. The downside was that it’s a bit dirty and ruiny.
Very warm people (I had 2 people literally take time out of their path to walk me to locations I was very confused in finding,) The restaurant recommended by the hostel was outstanding. The nightlife was tops---went late on a Thursday in the very beautiful city center.
Faro was our last stop on a two week vacation in Portugal that began in Porto and the Douro Valley, with several days in Lisbon. i think two days in Faro would be plenty of time to see everything. The waterfront area is a lagoon and isn't particularly attractive. If you're planning a stay at the beach, Faro would be a good stopping off point before going to one of the beach towns along the Algarve.
Faro is a tiny city and lovely for a few days to enjoy local cuisine and sites. Not much to do, but for a very good price the train station takes you to Lagos where there's much more to see and do.
