Our quintessential indochinese city for culture food & hinterland post CoVid lost of many excellent tribal craft shops too many far far to many massage outlets oh yes and cannabis also too many But quality & choice of food markedly improved Our 5 visit in >30 yrs
There are very strict dress codes for entry into Temples - no shorts, no bare shoulders or arms and no bare midriffs - no will need to plan for this if you want to fully enjoy the cultural attractions. The small red 'buses' that abound Chaing Mai represent good value for money to travel within and outside the old city. There are also Tuk-Tuks galore, but they are more expensive than the red 'buses'. A good place for a drink is the Forest Fern Cafe - very pleasant and cool under the trees and the ferns - we went everyday for a drink and a snack.
Love Chiang Mai as airport is not too far from the city or any hotels. Weather is much cooler than Bangkok with less traffic on the road. There are lots to eat, drink, shop or pampering yourself with a couple of spa/massage sessions. Great place!
I love Thailand! Always have, but was yet to travel to Chiang Mai! Slightly different vibe to Phuket, feel like it has much more of a local feel to it. Some sections seemed to be forgotten, but there were also lots of new buildings that were in the process of being developed. To stay: Baanchandra (Google it!! Amazing and quirky) 2 Places to eat if you have allergies such as gluten, dairy, shellfish, and peanut: The Garden Restaurant Mr. Green Vegan Restaurant Both looked after me and I would happily recommend their food and their service. Places to visit: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (Buddhist Temple) Wat Chedi Lam (Oldest Buddhist Temple) Huai Kaeo Waterfall (Beautiful falls to explore) Boon Lanna Muay Thai (Thai Boxing Training) 333 Shooting Range at the Grand Canyon (on the other side of this is an inflatable waterslide park) Loi Kroh Boxing Stadium (to watch Muay Thai) Lapize point co (Crystal and gemstones wholesaler) There were so many places I went to because as I went past they drew my attention. There was a small night market somewhere (where locals were doing their shopping) I managed to purchase a cool amulet for a friend and the guy gave me some info regarding the meanings and where he had had them blessed. (We had to engage using app translation methods as he did not speak any English and I know a minimal amount of Thai, but we both happily chatted and I valued that the language barrier did not prevent that) Rimping Supermarket is a diverse marketplace with Western products if you truly find yourself stuck without something you'd normally get from home. Traveling with allergies is definitely challenging, so to know this supermarket was nearby if for some reason I could not source safe food, I knew that here I was able to access GF Bread, Nut milk options (including a few I had not had before, walnut milk anyone?) and food like cereal and snacks like crackers, etc that I get from home.
depending on the time of travel, the air is extremely polluted.Looking for special wooden items, it's a perfect place, even many smaller workshops closed due to the low influx of tourists and all over reduced demand. A trip to the outskirts is recommended
Though its touristic city, staying in old town/city of Chiang Mai is peaceful and also quite a few attractions are there. one can also base oneself in chiang mai and travel around to chiang rai or other places. The Sunday walking market was a great place to not only shop for local souvenirs but also taste good local food, get massage but also listen to good music. getting around in chiang mai is also easy, as they have local transportation which is easily accessible. In chiang mai Sunday Market, Doi Suthep and Wat pha lad visits should be must
