Great little port town, nice harbor area and a charming downtown area. There are a lot of things to do here, outdoor lovers will enjoy it! Fishing, hiking, Fjordland's Nat'l park, etc. Food options are not bad, but somewhat limited - so do your research. Cruise ships come in every day. Kind of neat to see a giant ship up against the snow covered mountain backdrop. Red's Burgers = A OK! We fished with Matt @ Profishency Charters - he was amazing. One of their other captains was a super aggressive jerk to us...so stick with Matt if you go. Captain Jack's handled fish processing for us, for a fee (fairly expensive, vs. other locations in AK). Exit Glacier was a fun little walk, kind of depressing how much it's receded, but beautiful views. Mount Marathon is a challenging hike if you're so inclined!
Seward has a variety of things to do in the surrounding area. We salmon fished, rafted a river, hiked to glaciers, went to the Alaska SeaLIfe Center, and viewed marine wildlife on an awesome boat tour. All of this was within 15 minutes of the property we stayed at. Also, there are so many places to eat with great food!
Seward is a charming small town - at least in summer and you are expecting Alaska. Drivers stopped well back from us tourists crossing streets - even if we were not crossing at an intersection! A little cool - jacket recommended - but spectacular views, charming coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. Wildlife tours on land and water available, and friendly people. Oh, and the Alaska Sea Life Center is worth a visit to see local marine wildlife guaranteed! (Not sure if it would be quite as easy a visit during the cooler months.)
Cute little town , with lovely scenic surroundings. Everything in walking distance. Lots of activities can be managed from Seaward . We did hiking on exit glacier Did Dog sledding on top of Godwin Glacier Did 7 hour captain choice Kenai Fjord boat trip. Came by Golden Dome train from Anchorage to Seaward.
Lots of different things to do in town. Great parks (eg Waterfront park) and playground structures for kids! Trails in the woods close to town. A wide variety of restaurants and shopping. We ate at 5-6 different places and all were tasty. The Sea Life Center was very cool and great for the family. I could have watched the birds and harbor seals there all day. Tours by boat in the fjords is a must, but we did get lucky and took one on a sunny calm day. We saw orcas, whales, porpoises, puffins, sea lions, otters, a black bear on the beach, and a couple of glaciers. The National Park service office by the harbor is full of great displays and interpretive materials of all types (touch, sounds, etc). The NPS movie was fantastic. Would have loved to see the Exit Glacier and some sled dogs. Visited in late July.
Kenai Fjords cruises and hiking in the area is great. Exit Glacier and Harding Icefield as well as glaciers seen from the cruises were fantastic. SeaLife Center is a must! They do an incredible job and offer a lot of information about sea life in the area. Wish the restaurants were a bit more upscale. We really enjoyed Primrose Provisions and the The Highliner restaurants! Would go back in a heartbeat.
