Alaska

Alaska’s most famous draw is its vast, untamed wilderness – towering mountains, glaciers and endless skies. Known for epic wildlife and the aurora borealis, it offers adventurous family-friendly experiences and quiet, reflective trips for solo travellers seeking nature and small-town charm.

Top highlights are Denali National Park with North America’s highest peak and the marine wilderness of Kenai Fjords National Park. Don’t miss a glacier cruise to watch tidewater glaciers calve and spot whales. Stay in Anchorage for connections and Denali trips, Seward for fjord cruises and Fairbanks for aurora chasing.

The cabins are amazing, our was perfect like a mountain house. Made of wood with a pleasent balcony where to spend late afternoon after an amazing drive trough Denali Nation Park (10 min away from it). My fiancé and I we had an amazing time here. Restaurant is great, good quality! We felt in love with the breakfast brownie and cookies. Prepared and kind personnel.

It was a dignified and grand hotel with a historical background, excellently harmonizing with the pristine environment of Alaska. Having traveled to many places around the world, it was one of the most satisfying hotels I've stayed in. It is considered excellent in many aspects for the price.

Very close to the airport and hotel provided a 24hr shuttle. We had a beautiful room with separate seating area including TV- just what we wanted to relax in the day before a long journey back home to the U.K. Restaurant on site was also very useful.

Anchorage in mid April is just perfect. The mountains are still clothed in white and the weather is dramatic. Driving is easy; if there's any snow falling temperatures are high enough so it melts on streets.

Seward

Go to the Alaska Sealife center, fabulous educated helpers available to tell you about the sealife and their adventure of how they came to the center. Olivia was very knowledgeable about the Puffins and other birds, excited to tell their stories and survival skills. Rays was a great place for lunch, a bit pricey but good.

Fairbanks, Alaska is the best and closest place to see the...
Fairbanks

Fairbanks, Alaska is the best and closest place to see the Aurora! You only need to stay in Fairbanks 3-4 nights to be able to see the northern lights (do not go during Full Moon!). For aurora watching, there are many tours operators from Fairbanks or you can go on your own. You need to drive about 15-30 min out of town to see the northern lights. Besides seeing the Aurora at night (10pm-3am), we've done many activities in the day. In March, there's the World Ice Art Championships at the fairgrounds. We saw beautiful, multiple block ice sculptures, played checkers made of ice. The ticket allows you to see it in the day and at night when the ice sculptures are illuminated. Our other activities included snowmobiling (with heated handle bars and heated helmets), dog sledding, hiking to Castner ice caves (hiking 1 mile from the road) and going to the North Pole. We've enjoyed soaking at the Chena Hot Springs while seeing the beautiful snow covered scenery. Driving along the roads, we saw moose and caribou. We're been to Fairbanks 2 separate times and still want to go back again to try other things .. ice fishing and driving the trans-Alaska pipeline! Getting around was easy because we rented a car. The roads in and around town were always cleared. I can't wait to go back :)

Juneau

I travelled here for work and trying my hardest to make a long story short, Juneau is the most incredible place I’ve visited outside of the lower 48. The local and surrounding people, restaurants, nightlife, nature, wildlife, history; everything about the Juneau experience was just breathtaking and eye-opening to how underrated this area is. However, if you are spending more than a “tourist’s time” from Spring to Fall here (~a week +), BEWARE OF THE BOATS! The amount of cruise ship people exponentially exceeds as you get further into late Spring, and the locals WILL warn you; listen to them. Of course tourism is superb for the local economy and, but even being early in early in the season ourselves, these people come in DROVES. I recommend trekking around the channel (or working) throughout the day, and enjoying the nightlife with the locals (because they are all stupendous). Obviously you will HAVE to roam around the downtown restaurants, history and nature walks, and support the local shops, but from Douglas to the valley, to Auke bay and all the way to Point Bridget are countless attractions that the boat people only get ~8 hours to experience, while you’ll have the peace and time to spend loving the state’s capital region almost as much as I have.

Charming little town! Wished we had an extra day or two to explore. Perfect location for a couple or family whose goal is quality time together. There is just enough to explore not to be bored, plus just enough interesting coffee shops and restaurants to satisfy the need for variety. Want to come back in summer!

Homer

We enjoyed exploring the Home Spit with all its shops to browse & nice places to dine. We would highly recommend the Harbor Grill Seafood & Steak Restaurant. Walking along the beach on the Spit with the fresh air & seeing the Seafarer's Memorial was very moving. We enjoyed the Alaska Islands & Ocean visitor center was very educational. The walking trail here were really nice to get out & enjoy nature. Our son lives in Homer, so we had our own tour guide. He took us all around town, to many different beaches, trail & his favorite fishing spots. We saw many eagles & lots of Mama moose with babies up near Anchor Point where our son lives. Our trip to Homer was wonderful & we can't wait to go back!

Mendenhaven

Very convenient to all areas of Juneau. I have to say, this experience was the most breathtaking I have ever seen and I have been to several places around the world and the U.S. Should be on everyone's bucket list. Can you imagine a dogsled ride and less the two hours later, hiking a tropical looking trail and jumping into a lake.

(Hey Booking.com, the park wasn't renamed by the current...
McKinley Park

(Hey Booking.com, the park wasn't renamed by the current administration, just the mountain! So it is now called Mt. McKinley officially, but it is still Denali National Park!) Denali is an unusual National Park by comparison to the ones in "the lower 48". Unlike those other parks, you can't drive to all the key attractions. The only road into the park doesn't go very close to the standout feature--the mountain. At the visitor center you are more than 60 miles away from it! The park is huge; everything you can see from the road is less than 10% of the total park area. And with the road closed at roughly the halfway point (due to a landslide), you see even less. To get a real sense of the park, take the Tundra Wildnerness Bus Tour (linked from the park web site). This is one of four bus tours offered, and is the longest (5-6 hours)--but easily the best. You go as deep into the park as vehicles can go (to where the road is closed). The drivers have an average of 21 years of experience in the park, and will narrate the history, geology, flora and fauna. If they or you spot an animal, they will stop the bus and give you ample time to look at them. On our tour, we were extremely fortunate and saw all of "the big 4 mammals": Caribou, Dall sheep, Grizzly Bears, and Moose--some were even walking on the road! If you want your own adventure, you can walk or snowshoe or mush just about anywhere. There are very few designated trails, so explore!

Healy is very convenient if you have a car and are visiting Denali National Park and Preserve. There is a reasonably good grocery and liquor store. Denali Park is amazing, and I could not recommend it more if you like mountains. We were lucky enough to actually see the mountain.

Valdez was good.
Valdez

Valdez was good. Would of like a restaurant to fix what you catch. For the prices to eat I would lot a better portion of food. The fat mermaid was a disappointment. But the Valdez Outfitters was top notch! Would love to come back. We were on No Name for the first fishing adventure. We didn't catch our limit. But we did catch silver & pink salmon. My husband caught the variety of fish. We had 5 people on our boat. Guss did a tremendous job of trying to find the fish. He tried his hardest for us to catch our limit. But the fish didn't corporate. He warn us to watch our poles. So some people missed out on a big fish. I think if you missed your opportunity then the next person should be up to reel in a fish. But everybody had there chance. I think a deck hand would help. But I know it's crowded to make sure everybody gets a turn. Guss needs a chair with cushions.! Then for the second day of fishing. We went on the Chugach girl. Iit was for firther out in the ocean. But the weather wasnt going to corporate. But we went for the smaller Halibut. We caught our limit but they only weigh 15 lbs. We caught out limit on black bass (rock fish). The seats were better, but the waves were at least 6' or higher. It was ruff but we were there to fish. Lloyd was so fantastic. I don't think anybody was waiting for bait. We did get tangled up a bit. But that's the currents fault. Lloyd worked his butt off. The current made it Ruff. I highly recommend the VALDEZ OUTFITTERS ! This was my bucket list trip. Would love to come back to Valdez to Fish. Thank you to Guss & Lloyd. Hope if we do get to come back it's with you guys. Would love to reel in a Halibut thats a 100 pounder or bigger.
