Alaska

Alaska’s most famous draw is its vast, untamed wilderness – towering mountains, glaciers and endless skies. Known for epic wildlife and the aurora borealis, it offers adventurous family-friendly experiences and quiet, reflective trips for solo travellers seeking nature and small-town charm.

Top highlights are Denali National Park with North America’s highest peak and the marine wilderness of Kenai Fjords National Park. Don’t miss a glacier cruise to watch tidewater glaciers calve and spot whales. Stay in Anchorage for connections and Denali trips, Seward for fjord cruises and Fairbanks for aurora chasing.

Perfect location close to the airport with free shuttle service. Not noisy and certainly doesn't disturb your sleep. Very reasonably priced. If you are an aviation geek then this is the place for you. The hotel is aviation themed with great pictures, it is right next to a big seaplane base and the Anchorage Aviation museum is a 30 min walk. The staff were all very friendly, the rooms are spacious and clean. We stayed for a day prior to our departure and this hotel was a lot better than the one we used on arrival.

Beds were extremely comfortable. Deep bathtub. Quiet location but next to shops and restaurants. Near airport which was convenient, especially with a free shuttle service with very friendly and helpful drivers. Needed transport to get into the city but buses stop right outside the hotel. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.

The town is bustling a great. We got around well with our own car and internet for directions. There were lots of things to see and do. Some of the descriptions of stores were a little over the top compared to what was actually available.

Seward

The town does not have any charm save for the 1 block by the marina (Ray’s bar&grill was a great place to dine!). Not worth spending time there other than for catching one of the multiple day/half-day cruises offered by different companies.

There was something for everyone.
McKinley Park

There was something for everyone. For those who don't like or can't hike there were bus rides though the park. It provided great views of the area and of Mt. McKinley, when it is not covered by fog. For hikers there were plenty of nicely mark trails. It is worth the visit. The road through the park was closed past mile 43 due to rock slides. I understand it is scheduled to open in 2027. There are no private vehicle allowed past mile 13, but a bus service is available to mile 43 for a fee. Denali National Park is the only national park with a dog sled team. Daily presentations of the dog sled team is given during the summer months for free and is well worth seeing. It only takes a couple of hours. The visitor center has some nice presentations of the park animals. There are restrooms near the visitor center, a restaurant, and a bus depot nearby. There are easy hikes from the visitor center on clearly mark paths, mostly flat, for those who are not serious hikers. They are great for children.

Fairbanks is a great place to visit. It is an historical city, and there are military bases n the vicinity that help maintain its economy. A must see is Pioneer Park, which has many historical exhibits, including a complete steam stern wheeler river boat.

Talkeetna

Talkeetna is a very cute town that is about half way between Seward, AK and Denali Park and Preserve. It is genuine in all ways ... the people, the shops, the old-timey feel. It is a fun spot on any Alaska adventure and although one night is adequate, two is better. Be sure to carry insect repellent. The mosquitos are HUGE and relentless. I learned they are pollinators, so they have a teeny redeeming quality.

Homer

The drive to Homer is gorgeous. The town has anything you need and the spit is a place you just have to walk for yourself. We experienced a low tide and the beach walking was exceptional! You can eat at food trucks, get gelato, sit at a bar or pub or eat upscale - something for everyone, as long as you like seafood. Even if you don't go fishing, watching the fishing, fish preparation, etc. is fun. For us, without a fishing day, two days was the perfect amount of time to take it all in, enjoy the views and rest up. Many excursions leave from Homer so research those and add days as necessary.

Healy is very convenient if you have a car and are visiting Denali National Park and Preserve. There is a reasonably good grocery and liquor store. Denali Park is amazing, and I could not recommend it more if you like mountains. We were lucky enough to actually see the mountain.

Juneau

I travelled here for work and trying my hardest to make a long story short, Juneau is the most incredible place I’ve visited outside of the lower 48. The local and surrounding people, restaurants, nightlife, nature, wildlife, history; everything about the Juneau experience was just breathtaking and eye-opening to how underrated this area is. However, if you are spending more than a “tourist’s time” from Spring to Fall here (~a week +), BEWARE OF THE BOATS! The amount of cruise ship people exponentially exceeds as you get further into late Spring, and the locals WILL warn you; listen to them. Of course tourism is superb for the local economy and, but even being early in early in the season ourselves, these people come in DROVES. I recommend trekking around the channel (or working) throughout the day, and enjoying the nightlife with the locals (because they are all stupendous). Obviously you will HAVE to roam around the downtown restaurants, history and nature walks, and support the local shops, but from Douglas to the valley, to Auke bay and all the way to Point Bridget are countless attractions that the boat people only get ~8 hours to experience, while you’ll have the peace and time to spend loving the state’s capital region almost as much as I have.

Valdez was good.
Valdez

Valdez was good. Would of like a restaurant to fix what you catch. For the prices to eat I would lot a better portion of food. The fat mermaid was a disappointment. But the Valdez Outfitters was top notch! Would love to come back. We were on No Name for the first fishing adventure. We didn't catch our limit. But we did catch silver & pink salmon. My husband caught the variety of fish. We had 5 people on our boat. Guss did a tremendous job of trying to find the fish. He tried his hardest for us to catch our limit. But the fish didn't corporate. He warn us to watch our poles. So some people missed out on a big fish. I think if you missed your opportunity then the next person should be up to reel in a fish. But everybody had there chance. I think a deck hand would help. But I know it's crowded to make sure everybody gets a turn. Guss needs a chair with cushions.! Then for the second day of fishing. We went on the Chugach girl. Iit was for firther out in the ocean. But the weather wasnt going to corporate. But we went for the smaller Halibut. We caught our limit but they only weigh 15 lbs. We caught out limit on black bass (rock fish). The seats were better, but the waves were at least 6' or higher. It was ruff but we were there to fish. Lloyd was so fantastic. I don't think anybody was waiting for bait. We did get tangled up a bit. But that's the currents fault. Lloyd worked his butt off. The current made it Ruff. I highly recommend the VALDEZ OUTFITTERS ! This was my bucket list trip. Would love to come back to Valdez to Fish. Thank you to Guss & Lloyd. Hope if we do get to come back it's with you guys. Would love to reel in a Halibut thats a 100 pounder or bigger.

Having lived in Alaska before, we find the Matanuska Valley a beautiful place to stay, away from the larger city of Anchorage. You have easy access to many of the tourist spots in the MatSu Valley, and there is a fabulous homemade ice cream shop in Palmer that is a must! It is called the Big Dipper and is located at 101 W.
