  • Fontainhas Heritage Walk by Make It Happen

    Antiga Goa
You will explore the colourful heritage of Panjim, a neighbourhood once described by historian William Dalrymple as “a small chunk of Portugal washed up on the shores of the Indian Ocean.” As you move through the streets, you will see painstakingly preserved heritage buildings and traditional Portuguese‑style homes painted in striking bright colours — a photographer’s paradise. Along the way, you will learn untold history at Tobacco Square and hear intriguing tales about the area’s former colonial Portuguese residents from local storytellers. You will also meet residents who are actively keeping centuries of culture alive. The experience includes a meeting with a renowned local Goan musician, who will perform a live set featuring his distinctive blend of Konkani and Latin styles. You may also visit Panjim’s oldest bakery and sample traditional Goan treats with a refreshing beverage, though this is subject to the bakery’s operational days and timings. Overall, the walk blends architectural discovery, local stories and music to give you a close, human view of Panjim’s layered past and living culture.

On the Old Goa Heritage Walk you will revisit key moments from the time of Portuguese rule. You will learn how Old Goa was once the region's capital and a thriving city even before the Portuguese arrived. The walk will touch on its earlier role as the capital of the Bahmani Sultan Adil Shah and the arrival of the Portuguese in 1510 under Afonso de Albuquerque, when they captured the city from Adil Shah of the Bijapur Kingdom as they sought trade and to spread Christianity. Along the way you will explore some of Old Goa’s most historically significant buildings. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Old Goa houses some of the region’s grandest and oldest churches, including the Se Cathedral and the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Please note that on certain days, when the Se Cathedral or Basilica of Bom Jesus may be inaccessible because of mass services, the walk will include a visit to the Our Lady of Rosary Church on the historic Holy Hill instead.

At the Centre for Indo-Portuguese Arts you'll take a rare, guided visit through a gallery of authentic Azulejos and Indo-Portuguese artwork. Orlando, who has spent years preserving this dying art form, will explain how Azulejos began in Portugal and how they travelled to Goa. As you move through the collection, you'll learn how these painted tiles became part of everyday Goan life — on church walls, in heritage houses and even as nameplates. Alongside the gallery visit there is a hands-on painting session where you design and create a personalised tile under Orlando’s guidance. You’ll leave with a hand-painted piece you made yourself, and your finished tile will be couriered directly to your home after the workshop.

Explore Panjim’s Fontainhas neighbourhood with a local perspective. You will walk past the Immaculate Conception church and see the only pre-colonial palace of Panjim, moving through the picture-perfect lanes of the largest Latin Quarter in Asia. As you move through this UNESCO Heritage zone, you will connect with the district’s stories through its architecture and colourful streets, guided not just by a local but by an ishht (friend) of the neighbourhood. Along the way, the experience includes tasting traditional wood-fired, oven-baked Goan sweets at a vintage bakery and hearing lively Goan music played by a local musician, with the chance to dance if you wish. You’ll also have opportunities to talk with residents who often welcome visitors and share their own view of Panjim. This walk is aimed at those who prefer to taste slowly, listen deeply and engage meaningfully with the community.
