The setting is rural yet close to the city, surrounded by fresh local produce and a strong local water heritage. Along the way, you will notice how the landscape and the water supply shape local life and food.
In this environment you will enjoy the heart of Japanese home-style cooking. The experience will centre on simple, seasonal flavours drawn from nearby farms and the clear spring water that the area values. At the Tennen Rishin-ryu Hino Dojo in Hino City you will encounter a living tradition that began in the Edo period. The dojo preserves the Tennen Rishin-ryu style of swordsmanship, and you will learn the essence of that school through instruction in the actual training space where students practise to hone their skills. Hino City is also the hometown of the swordsmen who formed the Shinsengumi at the end of the Edo period, a group said to have been the strongest swordsmen and often called the Last Samurai, so the experience is set against a strong historical backdrop.
The session will be led by Masao Inoue, chairman of the Tennen Rishin-ryu Hino Dojo and a descendant of Shinsengumi executive Genzaburo Inoue. Along the way you will receive direct guidance on Tennen Rishin-ryu principles and have the chance to handle a Japanese sword, an object often described as the soul of the samurai. The combination of practical instruction, hands-on sword handling and the dojo’s historical setting will let you explore both the technical and cultural aspects of this samurai tradition.
