Completed in 1792 in neoclassical style following a public competition won by Giannantonio Selva, a close friend of Canova, the Teatro La Fenice initially served as one of several private venues for shows and operas. In December 1836, a devastating fire razed its interior, yet within a year, it emerged rebuilt, akin to the mythical phoenix that rises from its ashes.
Throughout the 19th century, La Fenice was the esteemed stage for numerous opera premieres, including Rossini's Tancredi, Sigismondo, and Semiramide, Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Beatrice di Tenda, Donizetti's Belisario, Pia de' Tolomei, and Maria de Rudenz, as well as Verdi's Ernani, Attila, Rigoletto, La traviata, and Simon Boccanegra.
With a seating capacity exceeding a thousand, La Fenice is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, further refined following its reconstruction post a devastating second fire in 1996.
