Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, the castle still serves as a royal residence and sits across 13 acres overlooking the town of Windsor. As you move through the site, you’ll explore the State Apartments, the working heart of the palace. These richly furnished rooms are used for ceremonial and official occasions and display masterpieces from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Leonardo da Vinci. During the winter months the richly decorated Semi-State Rooms are added to the visitor route. Along the way you’ll find St George’s Chapel, an imposing Gothic church and the resting place of several British monarchs such as Edward IV, Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Services are held regularly, and the chapel offers a peaceful contrast to the rest of the castle. You may also encounter the Changing of the Guard, a ceremonial military event that takes place at Windsor; timings vary and are weather dependent. Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House — a 1920s miniature home by Sir Edwin Lutyens, complete with working lights, running water and a library of original works — is currently closed for improvement works. From 16 July to 13 September 2026 the newly renamed and redesigned Venus Garden (formerly the East Terrace Garden) will be open to enjoy, offering an outdoor space within the castle walls inspired by patterns in nature.

Hampton Court Palace presents a tale of two palaces. Part is the grand Tudor palace first built by Cardinal Wolsey and later developed by Henry VIII. Adjoining it is the Baroque wing designed by Sir Christopher Wren for William III and Mary II in the 17th century. As you move through the site, you can immerse yourself in the vast Tudor Kitchens where Henry VIII’s banquets were prepared. You will climb the stairs into the magnificent Great Hall and pass through the Tudor State Apartments, then look down to the Chapel Royal from the Royal Pew. Along the way you’ll encounter the scale and detail that mark the Tudor court. The visit continues into later eras. You can venture into the enormous Queen’s State Apartments in the Georgian Palace, and finally spend time in the 17th century Baroque masterpiece of William III, which overlooks the splendid gardens. The contrast between Tudor splendour and Wren’s Baroque design is clear as you move from one part of the palace to the next.

Hampton Court Palace tells the story of two very different royal residences standing side by side. In the Tudor palace you can explore Henry VIII’s Apartments and see his stunningly recreated Imperial Crown in the Royal Pew. As you move below stairs, visit the vast Tudor Kitchens, where historically some 200 cooks, sergeants, grooms and pages worked to produce over 800 meals a day for the household. Alongside the Tudor rooms are the Baroque apartments created for William III and Mary II. Their elegant state rooms offer fine examples of late 17th-century decoration and open onto views of the magnificent gardens. Families will also enjoy the Magic Garden, a self-contained walled play area designed to be climbed upon, complete with a jousting arena, tiltyard towers and a fire-breathing dragon that introduces history through play and encourages contact with nature. You will also find the Georgian Apartments, the Triumphs of Caesar by Andrea Mantegna, and costumed interpreters who add historical colour as you explore the palace.
