The island is home to Aldabra tortoises, which were brought from the Seychelles in 1919, and they roam freely across the land. The island holds a unique historical significance. It was initially used as a quarantine station before the British built a prison for Stone Town in the 1890s. However, the prison building was never actually put into use.
