Esquel
Located in Esquel, 6 miles from La Hoya Ski Center, Pintó Hostel has accommodations with a shared lounge, free private parking and a garden. The owner has a cat, a friendly one. I love cats. I was sold at the first "meouw". Made the whole place feel like a homely hostel, and not just some place to crush at night time. Besides, the owner invited us to share some 'mate' and held long, great conversations with us about Argentine culture and society, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Breakfast was sufficient to get you going in the morning and there are pots and pans aplenty if you wish to cook something else, as well as space to store your food in the fridge; the heating was on most of the day and night and I was never cold or too hot; the beds were comfy, and all linen was washed regularly; hot water and good pressure in both shower rooms; all in all - great place!

The National Park “Parque Nacional dos Alerces” is so amazing and beautiful! Also, from a walking distance from the city there is a lagoon called “La Zeta”, perfect for the first day as the plane lands on the airport usually at noon and there is no time to go to the National Park. What I would recommend tourist to do is to organize their schedule by themselves. Tourism agencies are super expensive and they don’t offer super amazing experiences that you can’t do yourself. Just take a bus on the bus terminal at 8am (be early as it is according to arrival) for ARS600 (round trip) and you will be fine, but take food with you!!
Esquel is a good location to go to Parque Los Alerces, which we did on our first day of our stay. We loved the parc, but because we saw the best part, we decided not to go for another day. I liked that there is public transport to the park (one bus goes early in the morning, the bus goes back in the late afternoon, which is perfect if you go hiking, although we had to wait 1,5 hour after a boat tour in the park for our bus back to Esquel. Note that it's not easy to hitch hike from the park back to Esquel). On another day, we did make a small walk to a Laguna just outside esquel, which was nice, but we also could have gone by car/taxi (since you follow the main road if you walk up). The famous train Old Patagonian Express didn't go on the days we were in Esquel (unfortunately!) and the museum was closed (don't know why, maybe we were just too late or it's maybe not open every day). So in the end: i liked our stay, Esquel is a rather comfortable city, but just 2-3 days would have been enough for me. If you want to take the famous train trip: check departure before coming (i think outside summer, it only goes in weekend)
Esquel is an entry point for the los alerces national parc, about one hour away )don't be fooled by the fact that it's only 40km). There's a small hike to a lagoon and a slightly bigger one to the Cruz. Otherwise there's not much to do.. If you're not planning on chilling in the hostel, don't stay more than 4-5 days.
This is a city what was never really a nice tourist attraction. But as the years went by, the locals really made an effort to make it a interesting place to spend a few days. Now you can find nice hotels, good enough restaurants and nice stores to walk by in the city center.
Los Alarces, the nature park, is marvelous. Unfortenately they charge foreigners a higher rate then nationals and locale. We think that's a kind of discrimination! The atmosphere in toen is very fiendly.
Esquel is a very nice town with wide, boulevard streets and good restaurants. It is also very clean. There was a restaurant similar to a "Chuck E Cheese" that our grandchildren enjoyed very much. It was our second stay in Esquel and our son always says he would like to live there!
