While a pleasant town, it clearly needs some better care and infrastructures. It is disheartening to see some public and many private properties crumbling. Communication is a challenge, to say the least. You are lucky if you find one, anyone, who can speak some English. The best part of the town is its people; warm and inviting, despite the lack of communication. One never feels threatened or in lack of security, no matter where one might be across town.
San Juan is a small city but is fine for a short visit and is easy to drive around. The cathedral bell tower (Campanile) gives a nice view over the city centre, but you must buy the ticket at the Teatro Municipal on the main square first. There are plenty of nice restaurants and cafes in the centre and it's well policed and feels very safe.
SAN JUAN IS A WORKING CLASS CITY, A BIT RAGGED AT THE EDGES. NO TRUE CENTRAL DISTRICT HARD TO FIND STUFF OTHER THAN ESSENTIALS. SIDEWALKS TYPICALLY ROUGH, AS IN ALL ARGENTINA. GOOD BUS SERVICE NEED A BUS CARD AVAILABLE ONLY AT STALLS IN THE CENTER AND AT TERMINAL. SAN JUAN IS THE CENTER OF TRANSPORT FOR VISITING OTHER MORE INTERESTING PLACES--BARREAL NEAR THE ANDES, ISCHIGULASTO DINOSAUIR PARK, VALLE FERTIL, QUILMES RUINS, BELEN (AN INDIGENOUS TOWN), SAN JOSE JACHAL (NATURE TOURISM).
San Juan town was quaint but sleepy. Not much to do in terms of entertainment. Loved Ischigualasto Park - the sand and rock formations were amazing. Thousands of years of history at the UNESCO site. Unfortunately our Spanish was limited, so we missed lots of information as the guide only spoke Spanish, despite our request for an English speaking guide. If going on tour, pack lots of water and take your lunch. Food service is limited in the park. Temperature hit 52C at around 2pm, very important to use sunscreen, a hat and drink lots of water.
San Juan is a great city. It's very easy to move around (by car) and prople are very friendly. There's a lot of restaurant options. There are some historical landmarks, but the main attraction are the viñedos. There are 3/4 you can visit and you'll also get a free Wine Tasting. The landscapes are beautiful, especially if you go to the Zonda Valley, which is only 30' away by car. Overall, a really cool place for a short stay
Felt relatively safe. People, in general very friendly. Looks very different from other cities in Argentina due to the devostating earthquake 1944. This means you do not see grand old buildings or churches there. Everything is "new". Although a good atmosphere and some points of interest. Visit the surroundings. This is rural area with good food and vegetables/fruits and wines.
