We based ourselves in Devonport as we were visiting the coast area there We did travel south to do a bit of site seeing about Hobart etc. We travelled over and back on the Ferry which was a short 5 minute drive. You can see most of the coast attractions an easy 45 minute drive from Devonport. Tasmania has excellent playgrounds for kids
Because we left the Geelong Terminal in the day time, and arrived 10 hours later in the night time, at Devonport Terminal, all we wanted to do was stretch out and relax, after our Ferry crossing. We did the exact same return trip back to Geelong, disembarked off the ferry, grabbed something to eat, and hit the bed. Did decide to pre book lounge recliners on the return trip, for that little bit of extra comfort. Was well worth the extra payment ... Approx' $35.00 each. Devonport is easy to drive around, and see. Visit the Casino if you like in Launceston.
Proved to be a more enjoyable stay, than other people had told me it would be!! Its much more than the drop off point for the ferry. Devonport was a great base to wander about the central north of Tasmania going to Tamar Valley, Deloraine, Penguin and even out to Stanley.. Some really lovely eating spots.. for breakfast, we went to a gorgeous cafe called DRIFT which is located at 'The Bluff' Beach, in fact we went there every morning we stayed in Devonport!! It is right next door to the surf life saving club, over looking Bass straight, right on the water and serves beautiful food. Also we went to Central Bar & Restaurant for dinner as it had great food, was very popular with the locals and its across the river from the ferry terminal, so you can watch the ferry come in or leave for Melbourne.
Interesting to look around. We ate at an Indian restaurant which was good. We were only there one night and the following day waiting for the night ferry. We would like to go again and stay longer. There are interesting places to visit using Devonport as a base.
Devonport is a bit dull. Needs more interesting shops; art galleries and events. This isn’t easily fixed; a cultural fix would be complex. Devonport has lots of space; it needs artistic and intellectual input.
We arrived in Devonport on a day sailing of the Spirit of Tasmania. The crossing was quite rough and we were pleased that we had booked to stay in Devonport rather than continuing on towards Launceston. If we had arrived on a night crossing, we would have skipped Devonport and this is something to consider for others in the same situation. When we came back to Devonport on our return journey, we had breakfast at "Drift" cafe and can highly recommend it.
