Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.
The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.
Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.
Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.
The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Booking.com ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.
This was our 2nd annual trip to Hobart. It is a clean, fresh and welcoming city. We find it easy to navigate without a car, and there are plenty of places to eat, drink & visit.

My kids and I had a great time, I wish I had booked longer off work to stay longer in Hobart. Such a lovely vibrant city with great shopping and lots to do. We really had a great time. We ate at Mr Good Guy for dinner one night (which was a short walk from the Travelodge hotel) and we can’t wait to go back there and try more dishes as everything was delicious. They even made allowances for my having diabetes. Dangerfield is a great shop that my daughters loved so much we kept going back there, plenty of other excellent shops too. And Salamanca markets was bustling and interesting with lots to look at or buy and some fun food and drink vendors. We even watched a choir give a performance near Plato’s. Mona is amazing and only a quick bus ride from Hobart. And as it’s only a 2 1/2 hour bus trip down from Launceston to Hobart, we plan on coming back again soon.

We were first time Hobart visitors, and wow, what a great city it is! So much to do and see. Getting around on foot, tourist bus, ferry, boat, car...you can do it all with ease. Do yourself a favour and eat at the Drunken Admiral or if not into fish, try the quaint Harbour Lights Cafe for some delicious Italian! You need to be fit to walk up and down hills...or you will become 'Tassie fit' from all the sights to be seen! Mona was fabulous, catch the ferry from Sullivans Cove and enjoy the view along the way as you pass under the Tasman Bridge. Hot tip, research all the places you'd like to visit and book ahead to avoid disappointment. Pt Arthur and the Cascades Female Factory were rich in history, the Botanical Gardens were lovely. Salamanca Markets on Saturday...do it! There is so much to choose from, and we are hoping to visit again to do all the things we couldn't jam into our first trip to Tassie!

Loved the market at Salamanca.
Loved the market at Salamanca. The Den is a great bar and serves lovely bao buns, can definitely recommend the bang bang bao. The Whaler does good food, the mussels were good also the famous lobster roll. The Hope & Anchor, the oldest pub does the best food. The roast looked fantastic but we had the Wellington which we enjoyed and the portions were large. The Irish manager there was very welcoming. I recommend booking for dinner as a lot of people were disappointed to not be able to get into the dining room. It’s very popular.
St Davids Cathedral is worth a visit, very beautiful.

Like the rest of Tasmania, the most important aspect is the close proximity to so many contrasting attractions: compared to mainland states, it is a relatively short drive from the mountains to the sea, from the city to the country. The scenery is breath-taking!
The most perfect little apartment for a couple in Hobart! We loved everything about this place. It’s spacious and cozy. Big comfortable bed, and I loved the massage chair! Really good shower in a small bathroom. Perfect location with a very cheap Uber or walk into the CBD. I would definitely stay here again!
The hotel was located in a superb part of Hobart, with a delightful view of the harbour! It was an easy stroll to some of the main sites, as well as accessible to the airport via the main road. The room was comfortable and a decent size, with modern amenities and a fairly noiseless environment.
