The regional art gallery in Miles is terrific. We saw a particularly good exhibition. And the historical village is well worth a visit - very well done indeed, and beautifully maintained. The best we've seen.
The Dogwood Heritage Centre is a major attraction and is extremely well done. It gives a very intimate understanding of life in the district over time. For example, there is a relocated slab hut from the 19th century that has wall boards 3/4 metre wide. Can only imagine the timber stands in those days let alone the hand getting and milling operations in those early years. Another example, there is a relocated garage from the mid 20th century with things like displays of the complex lubricating schedule for early holdens and trucks that remind how much vehicles have improved. School rooms, post office bakehouse etc. As an experience it anchors the past and gives a better understanding of where our current world originated. Unfortunately there is very little on the indigenous experience.
We had dinner at the Queenslander Hotel, what a meal, it was so big we had trouble eating our desert, we had to take some home as we couldn't eat it all. We went to the Historical Village Museum that is well worth the time & money to see what Miles used to be like. We walked around for over 3 hours & didn't see all of it. It also brought back some memories of our youth.
Love this quiet little farming town with the beautiful outdoor museum which I could spend hours embarking on our history before a quick stop to the dainty little bakery which the food is oh soooo good there is also walking along the dogwood tracks along the condemine river but my favourite place for lunch and dinner would have to be the Windsor tavern pub meal restaurant quality everytime and do yourself a favour try the pizza
People in the town were very helpful, providing me with some great assistance with my car. Also had a great meal out at the local pub. Very generous servings and reasonable pricing. There is an historical museum and kids play park which looked great and was very well utilised. The roads along Leichhardt Way were really good and they are currently being enhanced further.
Small yet surprisingly well equipped with all the amenities you could want. 3 Hotels, numerous places to stay, Fuel (independent BP near Starline Motels has cheap fuel and indian food), IGA and Foodworks. The walk along the river is nice and we got to see geese with their goslings. Their is also a wild flower car route that you can take if interested.
