Sofia is the Bulgarian capital and its largest city, and is situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the very centre of the Balkan Peninsula. With a variety of architectural styles, picturesque scenery and easy access to outdoor activities, this city is a definite must-see!
From well-preserved city walls built in the 7th-century BC through to the early Medieval buildings. From the 4th-century Rotunda St. George and 10th-century Boyana Church with its stunning 13th-century frescoes to Socialist-era monumental constructions, Sofia offers a real treat for the city dwellers and history lovers.
Most of the popular landmarks are located in the Oborishte district, the most central part of the city featuring plenty of greenery, cobbled streets and the most popular landmark, the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Sofia offers plenty of natural sites too, including the renowned thermal and mineral springs, the primary reason Thracians established the city here before the 7th-century BC. Enjoy a walk in the most popular parks, the Borisova gradina or the impressive Vitosha Nature Park with over 270 square km situated entirely within the city limits.
From hiking to skiing on the Vitosha and from sightseeing to relaxing in mineral springs, Sofia offers a plethora of fun for everyone! On Booking.com you can find nearly 190 properties in the city: from 5-star accommodation in the city centre to convenient hotels near Sofia Airport.
Sofia has many sites to and can be done in two days...
Sofia has many sites to and can be done in two days comfortably, longer if you're a museum enthusiast. One day most sites can be covered. I chose a day trip to the Rila Monastery which is highly recommended. I also did a day trip to Poldiv, which is doable but I would say Poldiv needed a little more time if you like shopping. Sofia is easy to walk around. I didn't need public transport. Definitely recommend Sofia.

A great fun, young city -- on the heels of visiting London earlier that week, we loved the cleanliness, the great human pace of Sofia, the easy to navigate newer metro and the abundance of sights, free tours, easy shopping and activities for the entire family. The food was abundant and great, the pace of life felt human and youthful. We look forward to exploring more in depth the museums and side streets.

Sofia is interesting, many things to see.
Sofia is interesting, many things to see. The food is good and versatile. The restaurants are plentiful but you can encounter poor service in them. There are also good museums. The zoo is sort of famous regionally but was a disappointment because it is big but not well maintained. Parks are fub for kids.

We were pleasantly surprised by Sofia.
We were pleasantly surprised by Sofia. It’s a much grander and more interesting city than we expected. The main tourist sites are varied and within a quite compact area. There are decent coffee places and restaurants. We felt it to be a very safe city with drivers even stopping at pedestrian crossings! For western Europeans it’s a relatively cheap city to visit and stay in. You do not need a car to see most sites and parking it would be difficult.

Spread out although there is an excellent train/subway system if you can work out which line you need to take - people were helpful and pointed me in the right direction - super cheap too give it a go I enjoyed riding round and it operates from the main train station next to the coach station. I was tired after a bad nights dormitory stay and did find the Russian Monument I was looking for but I got up too late to go on a walking tour so missed the opportunity to explore. I avoided Sofia on the way back through from Belgogradchik and stayed at the train station to get somewhere else quicker. One of the least interesting capitals I've ever been too. Sorry Sofia

Sophia is a beautiful city.
Sophia is a beautiful city. Big wide streets and easy access to most places. Use the 'YELLOW' taxis only to get around. they are by far the cheapest way of moving around Sophia. There are many malls in Sophia to visit, The best restaurant for local Bulgarian food was TAVERN IZBATA +359889895533. And their prices are very cheap while the food was delicious. A second nice restaurant was RESTAURANT HADJIDRAGANOVITE IZBI +359898775936. Food portions are huge. take this into account when ordering.
The hotel is situated in the very center of Sofia, however, the neighbourhood was rather quiet. The stuff was very welcoming and responsive. The rooms were very clean and had everything we needed, wifi was working well as far as I remember, so we ended up booking the same hotel on our way back from Bulgaria.
We enjoyed our stay at the Leda Hotel. Although breakfast is not offered, they provided us with coffee and some traditional Bulgarian breakfast items. They offered us a lift to the zoo & they kept our luggage after checkout. Rooms are clean and warm (visited in March). We would stay again.
The best hotel in Bulgaria! The rooms are big and modern! Everything is clean and you can really enjoy your stay! Very professional and polite stuff! Each restaurant is spacious with delicious food. Special thanks to Tatyana from the SPA center!
My second stay. Close to the center and a secured parking space right in front of the hostel (7€ for 24 hours). Super nice staff who taught me all the history of Bulgaria 🇧🇬
