Sofia is the Bulgarian capital and its largest city, and is situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the very centre of the Balkan Peninsula. With a variety of architectural styles, picturesque scenery and easy access to outdoor activities, this city is a definite must-see!
From well-preserved city walls built in the 7th-century BC through to the early Medieval buildings. From the 4th-century Rotunda St. George and 10th-century Boyana Church with its stunning 13th-century frescoes to Socialist-era monumental constructions, Sofia offers a real treat for the city dwellers and history lovers.
Most of the popular landmarks are located in the Oborishte district, the most central part of the city featuring plenty of greenery, cobbled streets and the most popular landmark, the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Sofia offers plenty of natural sites too, including the renowned thermal and mineral springs, the primary reason Thracians established the city here before the 7th-century BC. Enjoy a walk in the most popular parks, the Borisova gradina or the impressive Vitosha Nature Park with over 270 square km situated entirely within the city limits.
From hiking to skiing on the Vitosha and from sightseeing to relaxing in mineral springs, Sofia offers a plethora of fun for everyone! On Booking.com you can find nearly 190 properties in the city: from 5-star accommodation in the city centre to convenient hotels near Sofia Airport.
Interesting mix of influences over the centuries. Some churches were not open when we visited despite advertising otherwise . This was ok as went back next day . Great walking tour to get a feel for city.
Food was diverse and plenty of places to eat .
Would definitely visit in Spring and go out to other area/ do some tours.
Not too many large chain shops so that was a welcome change.christmas markets were dotted around the city rather than all in one area.
Area around the Alexander Nevsky was interesting . Once you get a feel for the city ,easy to navigate. Felt safe ,only a minute amount of anti social behaviour by some youths ,practicing spitting 🤭. Not aimed at us , I hasten to add. Maybe they felt four middle aged women were too daunting!

Pleasantly surprised with Sofia. 2 days, maximum 3 is enough to explore the capital. I stayed a week, but took 3 day-excursions which were worth it. Lots of day excursions to chose from. Used Sofia as a base.

Wonderful city, easy to navigate, fantastic 'free Sofia Tours' (just tip the guide). A pedestrian street several blocks long with restaurants and shops with all ages strolling along and laughing and very friendly and safe feeling. I wish every city was like this. Just the right size with the important stuff easily accessible. I was very pleasantly surprised as I hadn't heard much about Sofia. Was in the Balkans and had a few extra days so I stopped here. So glad I did!!

Lovely city, clean, nice cafes, many restaurants and shops. Inexpensive prices.
The city center is accessible on foot, cheap and convenient public transportation using the personal credit card without the need to purchase a card.
Statues, churches, ancient buildings, squares, parks all over the city
The city does not strictly prevent smoking in closed places, few restaurants permit smoking inside
The cars throughout the city emit polluting smoke at a high level,
Taxis drive with windows open and smoke enters the taxi.

Great city with amazing places to visit - both historical and modern. As the capital you will be able to find anything you want from cozy neighborhood taverns to ultra modern culinary experiences. There are also a lot of historical places to visit. All in all, a city worth the visit.

This is a grand hotel. It's well presented and the room I stayed in had recently been refurbished. The breakfast was excellent and there were many options to cover every diet and taste. The ground floor bar was fine and stayed open reasonably late. The hotel is in a great location with lots of bars and restaurants nearby. Bulgaria's parliament is around the corner. The hotel is just two stops on the metro to the main railway and bus stations.
We couldn’t ask more for the price ! Great location, absolutely friendly staff! Big THANKS to Veselin (reception)!!!He made our short stay enjoyable to maximum! Recommended best traditional Bulgarian restaurant, recommended the massage in the hotel, both were unreal! Thanks for the warm welcoming! We will see you again!Happy holidays!

The best hotel in Bulgaria! The rooms are big and modern! Everything is clean and you can really enjoy your stay! Very professional and polite stuff! Each restaurant is spacious with delicious food. Special thanks to Tatyana from the SPA center!
Beds are comfortable
Personnel in the restaurant is very nice but understaffed
Wouldn’t reload the Bulgarian prosciutto and sausage at breakfast , kitchen said it was finished , unheard for a 5 star luxury hotel
The breakfast was one of the best I have ever had ... A big part due to the mini sausages that were so good, I was yet to try something so tasty in a hotel in Bulgaria.
