Sofia is the Bulgarian capital and its largest city, and is situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the very centre of the Balkan Peninsula. With a variety of architectural styles, picturesque scenery and easy access to outdoor activities, this city is a definite must-see!
From well-preserved city walls built in the 7th-century BC through to the early Medieval buildings. From the 4th-century Rotunda St. George and 10th-century Boyana Church with its stunning 13th-century frescoes to Socialist-era monumental constructions, Sofia offers a real treat for the city dwellers and history lovers.
Most of the popular landmarks are located in the Oborishte district, the most central part of the city featuring plenty of greenery, cobbled streets and the most popular landmark, the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Sofia offers plenty of natural sites too, including the renowned thermal and mineral springs, the primary reason Thracians established the city here before the 7th-century BC. Enjoy a walk in the most popular parks, the Borisova gradina or the impressive Vitosha Nature Park with over 270 square km situated entirely within the city limits.
From hiking to skiing on the Vitosha and from sightseeing to relaxing in mineral springs, Sofia offers a plethora of fun for everyone! On Booking.com you can find nearly 190 properties in the city: from 5-star accommodation in the city centre to convenient hotels near Sofia Airport.
We overestimated how much we would need to take with us. Food and drinks were cheap, the metro (Subway) cost 1.60 in the local currency (70 pence) per trip event all the way to the airport. City is very clean and the people mostly friendly, very safe to walk around even at night. We were approached by a few youngsters who wondered why we chose Sofia and were pleased we did. Yes, the older people were more reserved. Most people spoke English (some basic0 and were impressed that we attempted to use the few words we had learnt. The language is not easy to learn, however, it's easy to navigate your way. Don't bother with buying duty free drinks at the airport prior to landing in Sofia. The local shops will most likely beat the duty free prices. if you have a day, go to Plovdiv. 3 hours by train, 2 hours by bus. It prides itself as the "oldest city" in Europe and a day trip is plenty of time to do most the city has to offer (Old roman ruins, amphitheatre, old city, old stadium, historical museum etc etc etc)).
We knew very little about Sofia before our visit and so were impressed by the cosmopolitan nature of Bulgaria's largest city. We especially enjoyed dining and people watching along the Vitosha pedestrian boulevard
On the whole Sofia is not a beautiful city, but it has some very interesting things to see: the Nevski cathedral, the icons museum and other good museums, a lot of archaeology, bulgarian orthodox churches, russian orthodox church, mosque and a synagogue; the frescoes in boyana church are breath taking
Sofia is a capital of an Ex Eastern block country. It changes everyday and at the moment is a strange mix of Soviet block past and modern Europe/NATO country. You can see many beautiful places. Restaurants are superb. Local cuisine and modern service. At the same time please pay attention when you walk. There are side walks that are demolished and in very bad conditions. Parked cars everywhere. You have no choice but to step on the car road. Drivers are aggressive and could be stressful for a westerners. Cars are noisy. Taxi drivers try to take advantage of unexperienced clients. Some charge 2 fold higher. Trying to call a taxi by a dispatcher could be a very bad experience. I had this twice. They refuse to take calls for short distances. Less than a kilometer is a NO from everybody. People in Sofia smile very rarely. When you approach them, most of them are friendly and with a good spirit. It is very strange feeling. Expressions on the faces are like it is the end of the world. Behind this is a vibrant and good spirit of the Bulgarian people. It is a phenomenon that is impossible to explain. The view of old communism block of flats is .... scary and shocking. Garbage and dirt everywhere. At the same time you can see modern buildings everywhere. Young people are like in the rest of Europe. Older generation is with a lot of luggage from the past. Graffiti are everywhere. Ugly and scary. The smell of the city changes every 50-100 meters. Mostly smell of bad pipes and sewage. The most awful for me is the stinky tobacco smell everywhere. It is simply suffocating. Garbage containers are visible everywhere. You have to go in proximity around them. Nobody pays attention to these "small" details. Next to Sofia is a beautiful mountain Vitosha. Strongly recommend to visit. After visiting Vitosha you will have a desire to leave Sofia ASAP.
I can be content to say that this was my 30th visit to the City since the first time in 2006, and I have just booked to return again. I love the place: plenty of sights to see, lots of good parks, great night-life scene (all night, if you have the stamina!), first class food and some excellent wines which are cheap by English standards, and very friendly people.
It is a very interesting city, if one has a time to discover. Many historical buildings, parks, clubs. One can have full days of exploration, local and international good, and some interesting bar experiences.
