Our February visit to Haines Junction meant that most of the businesses were closed for the season. The scenery however was spectacular! The Mile 1016 Pub was open and if you find your way there we would most definitely recommend the Nachos, the best we’ve ever had!
Haines Junction is a small town on the Alaska Highway, at the junction of important roads to the north and south. Some of the shops had closed for the season but we were able to obtain the supplies we needed and there are several places available for an evening meal. For us, the mountains are the highlight of this region. Every time we thought we had seen the best scenery, we would turn a curve in the road and would be dazzled by more mountains and lakes. It is a wonderful area for a road trip.
The scenery in this location, and in small communities which are easily reached from Haines Junction, make this a great place to visit and explore. The mountains are amazing and, on our visit, were covered with snow. Quite a treat for us.
Very familiar with H.J. Plan ahead if you’re travelling September to May. We missed out on ice cream at Frosty’s and fresh baking at the Village Bakery, but we were prepared for the quiet shoulder season (Sep27-29). No snow on the ground, but the Mountains had a fresh dusting. Saw beautiful sunsets behind snow tipped mountains, amazing auroras dancing in the night sky and a couple of young moose along the highway. The air was crisp and clean. We did have some fun shopping and finding good end of season deals at Acacia Vintage. A much needed relaxing Yukon weekend.
It has lots of accommodation to choose from to suit most budgets. The visitor centre (open seasonally) is fantastic. Lots of maps, books interesting things to look at & do. Knowledgeable staff. The pub next to the Alcan motor inn was great. Good food & friendly. Lots of fab walks/trails close to town.
The purity of nature was amazing. You could travel around for months just in aww. The people were friendly and helpful always happy that people are traveling there, giving advice on what to see and do. The only complaint is there is no real grocery store so go prepared when leaving Whitehorse. The upside to this is all the amazing restaurants to eat at.
