I personally love Nanaimo due to it's location, it's very central, not far from Victoria, DT Vancouver, and Northern parts of the Island. City isn't too big that it characterizes the typical busy city life, but it isn't small that it feels like everything is far apart and closes at 4pm. People are friendly, all the amenities are available, even Costco, the Bay, and fast food chains (if that's your thing). Traffic is apparently rated the best among Canada, even during busy hours; although the locals will say otherwise. Like all other parts of the Island, there are tons of outdoor activities to choose from. It's a great place to live and/or visit.
The harbor is pretty but the downtown is rundown and old and dirty. Lots of homeless looking people hanging around or laying around. Even my cab driver told me to be careful when walking about. I was really disappointed and surprised at how many businesses were closed mid afternoon.
Very interesting city, lots to see and do. We found that we didn't have nearly enough time to take it all in. We missed most of the "tourist" sites as many were closed due to Covid 19.
The waterfront is a breathtaking view and a leisurely walk will revitalize the mental and physical well being. The park has an abundance of sports facilities. This is a great hub going to Victoria on the south or Port Alberni, Tofino going to the west. Then you have the ferry to Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen.
Nanaimo is the unsung urban gem of Vancouver Island. It's smaller than Victoria and definitely not "quaint" or "ye olde England," the way the capital city is, but it has its own gritty charm and authenticity. There's a great waterfront with miles of seawall to walk on. Lots of good restaurants, galleries and cultural amenities. Just avert your gaze from the folks sleeping under the bridges or passed out in the doorways downtown. Other than one of the worst urban drug problems in Canada, it's a little piece of paradise.
For People who like nature, it is great. The Parks are amazing. But it is a very slow paced city. I would recommend people to come in a sunny day ( or weekend), explore the parks by the water and visit downtown. People are really friendly.
