At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Easy to get around on foot hotel provided Basel card which is excellent free public transport around the city very good. Lots of places to eat and drink Basel feels safe Would recommend tidbits vegetarian restaurant
I didn't have long enough but I thought I would have liked to swim in the Rhine having watched people drift by on the current cool.and lots of fun. Basel has loads for visitors to see and do and you really need more than 2 nights as I only had on this occasion.
We came to see the Fauve exhibition in the Kunstmuseum, it was outstanding, beyond all expectations. The town itself is lovely, they gave us a Basel card for free (free public transport, 50% off museum entrance).
Old town was really interesting and quite a nice understated vibe. Doesn’t feel a tourist destination as such just a city with a history. The river is spectacular and it is so close to both France and Germany that you can easily sample three countries in a weekend.
Basel is a small city to explore but very centrally located to both France and Germany and with easy access to other parts of Switzerland. Train service is excellent and frequent. Free public transport within the city. We trained to both Colmar and Strasbourg in France for easy and worthwhile day trips.
We liked the complementary tram pass that allowed us to see most of the city by hopping on and off. We enjoyed going over to Weil am Rhein and Fluh and the residential area in the hilly area. We managed to use tram 15, 10, 11, 8, 16 and 3. Unfortunately because of our dietary restrictions we couldn’t eat out. We also couldn’t join any walking tour because of our physical limitations- my friend has a bad knee and I a recovering fractured ankle.
The other hotel I stayed in Switzerland didn't provide shampoo and soap, but Vision Apartments provides high quality ones with big volume. The location is excellent as well - 10 minutes walks from the central station, and can easily take tram trains to museums or even by walk. The pool area on the roof top is a must visit. The yard on the ground in the hotel is also very cozy. We bought food from Micro and enjoyed our diner in the yard.
Friendly staff, clean room/toilets/showers/kitchen/common areas, and the layout of the room was very cool! I especially liked the heaters in the showers. Great design thinking for the customers, so we are not cold after a shower I think this is the best hotel I have been in Switzerland (out of 4), was collaborated by other friendly guests as we cooked together.
It is a small and friendly place to be. The staff is lovely. I had a super friendly welcome, and got helpful information for everything I needed. I loved the amenities in the room and the bathroom, and everything is super clean. Considering the prices in Switzerland I found this to be excellent value for money. It will be my place to go when I come back to Basel.
Hotel is located by the river and very close to the shops and it has restaurant at the back for you to have evening meal. Room is comfortable but very hot during summer. A standing fan is provided as there is no aircon which is common in Switzerland. Reasonable continental breakfast provided. One can take no8 tram near the hotel to Basel Sbb and city centre
Staff was very friendly, bar area / kitchen area was very cosy, nice garden, etc. My room was HUGE, clean and the mattress very comfortable. Another good thing to mention: In many hotels in Switzerland this winter the radiators were cold during the night hours, absolutely no heating. In the HYVE, there was a nice warmth and I had a very good sleep!
We chose Motel One due to a previous wonderful stay with this chain and it’s proximity to the start and finish line of the Dreiländerauf, a half marathon though Switzerland, France, and Germany. it’s in a perfect location downtown, amidst sights, open plazas used for public events. restaurants, and the river Rhine. super-clean and comfortable!!
The customer service support was great. This is a self checkin hotel, and when we arrived due to a problem in booking.com sistem our payment was not visible. The lady from hotel's customer support was very helpful and even if it was late in the night, she resolved the problem and we entered our room without any problem.
Check out possible till 12:00 (or later as a member). Beds at IBIS hotels are really excellent and the rooms have black out curtains and air conditioning. Free ticket to use the public transportation which also gives discounts on city museums and the hotel is served by 2 tram lines.
Location was excellent- very close to the old town. The room was very spacious. Staff at the front desk was very informative and helpful. Breakfast was a choice of buffet or continental. We enjoyed this 3 star hotel more than ssveral 4 star hotels on our trip
This hotel really has its act together - super efficient and well organised. Arrived to find even a little street map of the city in the room and a kettle for tea (unusual in Switzerland). Perfect place to break while travelling by rail.
Everything. Location is perfect. Room overlooking the Rhine was fabulous (and entertaining as the gondola races were happening). This hotel has every convenience technology could provide, but it is old Europe elegance and service.
You get free pass on any tram & free WiFi around the city. Weird enough, in Switzerland you gotta pay for Roaming, unlike any other country in Europe, where you can use your plan as you would do back home
The buffet breakfast was excellent! There was a wide variety of food to choose from and plenty of it. The guy working the buffet was very friendly and nice. I highly recommend staying at this hotel!
Nice, city hotel, far away from center bıt they are giving free tram tickets. You can call it expensive, however a hotel in Switzerland :)
The central location was great to get around the city, or to get a train or public transport around the area or other parts of Switzerland
Very central location with Parking directly below the hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice and clean rooms.
Staff are very helpful, location is really central, decent breakfast and very reasonable price for Switzerland
The Hotel has a Pizza Restaurant that was very good ( The Pizza I mean) .
