At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Easy to get around on foot hotel provided Basel card which is excellent free public transport around the city very good. Lots of places to eat and drink Basel feels safe Would recommend tidbits vegetarian restaurant
I didn't have long enough but I thought I would have liked to swim in the Rhine having watched people drift by on the current cool.and lots of fun. Basel has loads for visitors to see and do and you really need more than 2 nights as I only had on this occasion.
We came to see the Fauve exhibition in the Kunstmuseum, it was outstanding, beyond all expectations. The town itself is lovely, they gave us a Basel card for free (free public transport, 50% off museum entrance).
Old town was really interesting and quite a nice understated vibe. Doesn’t feel a tourist destination as such just a city with a history. The river is spectacular and it is so close to both France and Germany that you can easily sample three countries in a weekend.
Basel is a small city to explore but very centrally located to both France and Germany and with easy access to other parts of Switzerland. Train service is excellent and frequent. Free public transport within the city. We trained to both Colmar and Strasbourg in France for easy and worthwhile day trips.
We liked the complementary tram pass that allowed us to see most of the city by hopping on and off. We enjoyed going over to Weil am Rhein and Fluh and the residential area in the hilly area. We managed to use tram 15, 10, 11, 8, 16 and 3. Unfortunately because of our dietary restrictions we couldn’t eat out. We also couldn’t join any walking tour because of our physical limitations- my friend has a bad knee and I a recovering fractured ankle.
Hotel is located by the river and very close to the shops and it has restaurant at the back for you to have evening meal. Room is comfortable but very hot during summer. A standing fan is provided as there is no aircon which is common in Switzerland. Reasonable continental breakfast provided. One can take no8 tram near the hotel to Basel Sbb and city centre
This was one of our favourite hotels to go to with our children while we were in Europe for 3 weeks. Wish we stayed here longer. The room had a great view just to the side of the river and they have everything you need while traveling with 2 young children! Our kids loved the toys they had set up for them. The breakfast was delicious with lots of options!!
This was our best hotel stay in our trip to Italy & Switzerland. The Apartment was very clean, we loved the room set up, perfect for a couple. The kitchen was very nice. The apartment was a few minute walk to the Basel train and main Tram station. The staff was helpful. We are looking forward to staying in other Vision Apartments on future trips.
Enjoyed our stay at Hotel D which was a small boutique hotel with lovely rooms and staff that was ready to greet and answer questions. A delicious breakfast offered each morning for an additional fee was well worth it. Great location made it easy to access public transportation and walk to old Town areas.
Staff was welcoming, professional and just perfect. Wonderful complementary Cappucino. Breakfast was exceptional, personalised and had healthy choices. Room was was quiet in spite of facing the street. The staff were best ambassadors for Basel and Switzerland - please send them my appreciation.
Great location next to Train Station and tram hub. Short walk to city centre. Comfortable smart hotel, good sized rooms. Well equipped and coffee machine in lobby. No staff on site is a little worrying, what to do if you have a problem? Nothing went wrong, but what if key didn't work?
fantastic hotel, very luxurious and comfortable. location is perfect and the staff are lovely. Check in was simple and Hugo was very friendly and helpful. the rooms were fantastic and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay here and was the best hotel we stayed in whilst in Switzerland.
Wonderful hotel in Basel. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Good size room and bathroom. Smooth check-in and check-out. They provided us with a great free travel card. However, you are right next to the cute old town so you may not need this card.
We loved this hotel. Great location, design, comfort... what more could you want. We have stayed twice. Reasonable value for Switzerland, too. We cycled there on our own bikes and they let us keep them in the courtyard. Super helpful staff.
Given the high price of accommodations in Switzerland, this hotel is a reasonable value. The people in the restaurant are pleasant and the food is a value. The location is good with a few signs of it becoming a rougher neighborhood.
Nice modern hotel, spacious room, great for a family with small kids. Convenient small kitchenette and nespresso machine. There was also a playroom on our floor. Close to tram stop 14 which goes to city centre.
Location right in old town! Ambience...beautiful surroundings. This hotel started out as a church in 1130 AD, then it was a monastery and after that a police station and prison! If these walls could talk.
It didn't meet my expectations. I had to climb up a bunker bed at my old age. It was the only available one coz hotel was budget we were told. No hot water for tea in the room. Worst hotel
Price is decent for Switzerland, 50m from the hotel there is a tram which takes you to the town centre in 10 mins
Excellent hotel, value for money, with lots of extras. Kind and friendly staff, very clean. Will stay again.
Everything is perfect. Switzerland is a country with great people and great services.
Comfortable bed, well-equipped room. Cheap price in Switzerland. Helpful staff.
