At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Basel is a great city to explore on foot. I enjoyed walking along the river discovering museums and restaurants. I also liked exploring the major pedestrian area. I was able to walk from the train station but there is much public transport available, i.e. trams and buses. With the Basel card that I was given as part of my hotel stay, it also made visiting museums cheaper and provided free public transport for the duration of my stay.

For us, unfortunately Basel was not worth the trip, we were spending the last night of our holidays there because it is closer to the airport we used, and we thought it was going to be nice place but it was very expensive, not much to see and boring

A nice city. Not too big and not too small.
A nice city. Not too big and not too small. We had a few nice meals and drinks in a number of establishments of which there seems to be an ample selection to choose from. Also had time for a couple of museum visits.

A lovely city. Easy to walk around. Bonus is the river Rhine which is absolutely lovely to walk along. Historic town /old town is all pedestrian which makes it very easy to walk. A day trip to Freiburg is also worth doing and it's only 50 minutes on the train.

We always enjoy our stay on the Rhine Promenade in Klein Basel where The Basel Tattoo is held each summer. It is set in the historic Kaserne courtyard, and offers a unique blend of tradition and spectacle, drawing visitors from around the world. Inspired by the famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the event has become a highlight of our cultural calendar, celebrating both Swiss heritage and global musical artistry.
Staying nearby means we can enjoy the atmosphere along the river bank and also cool down with a swim in the river, which is quite special and impossible in many cities worldwide. Thank you Basel for this great experience

The transportation in Basel is very convenient, with an efficient tram system that makes getting around the city easy. The city itself is beautifully situated along the Rhine River, offering picturesque views and charming historical architecture. Basel is known for its rich cultural atmosphere, with a vibrant arts scene, numerous galleries, and world-class museums. I was pleasantly surprised to see works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso at the Basel museum. The city also hosts the renowned Art Basel fair, attracting art lovers from around the world. The only downside is that the cost of living is relatively high. However, Basel is quite safe, and well-suited for independent travelers.
It was a safe nice and environment for my wife and her friend. This was their first time in Basel and they couldn't believe the location. It was near everything and they loved being in the middle of the Christmas market . The rooms where extremely quiet considering the location and they were clean. She mentioned the receptionist who also spoke Spanish was a very friendly and helpful person. As they continue to travel through Switzerland they decided to come back one more time as it was a very positive experience.
Very sketchy, unsafe area - more unsafe than any areas I've seen in Switzerland. Even to enter the building at night, one is scared, and when you do not have the code at hand to enter the building, even more. The info on how to enter the building and room is super unclear. The display inside also got stuck, so it was really a hassle. People on the street shouting all night. Strange idea to do a self check-in hotel in such an unsafe place- you need staff then.
Breakfast was good but very expensive as is Switzerland
Hotel staff exceptional - giving me a kettle when I asked for boiling water and a glass when I bought some wine from their chiller
Was even able to get BBC 1&2 on room TV
- all the facilities worked perfectly.
- we rested very well
- very good breakfast
- excelent, modern, spacious parking garage (not cheap but is Switzerland)
