Very old and floor on floor, room in room hotel with humidity smell. My breakfast was included but I paid again at check out. A receptionist told me it is a merging of three hotel and you had your breakfast in a wrong cafeteria. How could I know that? 😏

FAQs about hotels in Basel

Switzerland Through the Ages

At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.

Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.

When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.

The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!

The city is undergoing major construction and road maintenance works and the signage for tourists is sparse. Many roads and tram lines are closed and the detours are not well signalled. It could be a beautiful city, but it isn’t at present.

    Basel is a fabulous city.

Basel is a fabulous city. The art and architecture available and variety of museums is amazing. As is the Basel card you receive with your booking that let's you ride transport free and gives 50% off many attractions. The many little bars along the river were lovely and the flow powered ferries were a lot of fun. Do be aware VAT is not included in prices there and that it being outside the EU phone roaming may be more.

I did not expect too much, I was very pleasantly surprised. It has all the charm of France and the calm of a small German town. The best surprise is the amount of art attractions (wall art, graffiti, museum, etc.)

    Nice city and very walkable.

Nice city and very walkable. Two days is about right unless you're using it as a base for wider travel. Best avoid a stay across a Monday because virtually everything (museums and restaurants) seems to be shut. Best place we visited was the Paper Mill - in effect a museum of the history of paper, writing, printing and bookbinding. The Jewish museum is also fascinating.

Basel is a beautiful city, the hotels will give every visitor a free ticket for transport, which is great, although it is best to walk around. There are interesting museums in the city - the music museum, where you can learn a lot about musical instruments and listen to them, the toy museum, the tinguely museum, etc.

A very friendly city, with an amazing tram system All hotel guests get a free Baselcard, which allows free travel on public transport in the city. There is plenty to see in the city to keep a visitor occupied. If you have seen all the sites in Basel and have a day free, Colmar, a small but beautiful city in Alsace, France, is a 50 minute train ride away.

Good amenities - an oven, washing machine, dishwasher, and stove. The bathroom was very nice and modern. It has a great shower and the TV was ideal for late night viewing. The check-in process was very smooth. The location was great as it was walking distance from the main areas. I personally wasn't a fan of Basel as there isn't a lot to do to be honest. It is stupidly expensive and I'm sure there's much better cities to visit in Switzerland. I won't be visiting Basel again.

The location is on the bus route between the train stations so getting around was simple. Our room was exactly as described, it was very comfortable, clean, and quiet, even though it was street-facing. Switzerland is expensive, so having a hearty breakfast really set us up for the day. Breakfast was self-service, there was a good range of hot and cold items, and everything was replenished regularly.

As good as I expected to an youth hotels in Switzerland. Very good location(very easy to find), kind staff...I just happened to share the room with a bit crazy girl and it wasn't their fault that she wasn't well and drunk, but they changed my room on my request at the end...except that incident, everything was good and I had a great stay in Basel youth hostel.
