Alpine Resort and Large Glaciers
Grindelwald lies at more than 1000 metres above sea level, offering top-class ski slopes and an imposing Alpine landscape. It is located in the canton of Bern, in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aletsch is the largest glacier to be found in the Alps.
Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. During the second half of the 19th century, roads and railway lines were developed, allowing a constant influx of visitors.
