Walking around the cobblestone streets with colorful buildings and staircases was fun! One day here was enough for me to see it all. However, I would recommend spending a 2nd day 5 miles north in Viña del Mar to enjoy the views of the ocean from the beach. If you have a day or two to kill while in Santiago, I’d definitely recommend the 2 hr bus trip to Valpo for additional sightseeing.
A lovely town with real character. If you love street art, you will love this place. It's a great place to walk around during the day and take in the views. You will definitely get firmer glutes walking around here, the place is seriously hilly. The beach is also fairly nice, although the sea is cold. Food is fairly expensive in the restaurants we found. For someone on a budget, I would recommend finding a place with a kitchen to stay in. Some of the street food is also fairly reasonably priced. Be careful with your belongings, it is quite common for opportunist theft here. We saw 2 people get things stolen, one lady had a necklace ripped off and another guy had his phone snatched. I wouldn't say I felt at risk, but I'd say your valuable items might be. Don't be flashy and take care with your, phone, wallet, and bag, then you will be fine. Overall I felt a 4-day stay was a good amount of time to take in the city's highlights. However, I feel you could easily get lost here for months, if you were so inclined, particularly if you like art and cool scenery to take photos of.
Liked - the port area with container port, cruise terminal and naval base in close proximity. The market hall there now dedicated to numerous restaurants. The trip around the bay in a small tourist boat. The ascensores (funiculars) of which it is said 16 or so are still running. Lovers of poetry ( or just lovers) should visit PABLO NERUDA’S house, La Sebastiana, now a museum to the great Chilean poet who died in 1975, and his last love. High above the port and sea beyond it, it has a unique panoramic view. The formal architecture of the public buildings (congress, Armada and customs buildings) contrasting the improvised, quirky and graffitied homes and restaurants. The artistry of some of the graffiti. The friendliness of the Chilean people I came across. Viña del Mar a short quick comfortable Train ride north. Not so good - the artless vandalism of most of the graffiti.
I was travelling with my 15 year old son, we have very little Spanish between us so felt quite limited In our ability to ask for information. We were warned about safety by our Uber driver when we arrived so were quite wary of going out at night. It would be useful to have more information about safe places to go, good places to eat etc especially for the evening. Walking the streets looking at all the street art was a great thing to do and felt safe during the day. Beware it is exceedingly hilly!! We did wait for the free walking tour but the guide didn’t turn up, which was a shame. One evening we took an Uber to Vina del Mar which felt safer and being on the beach for sunset was lovely, I would recommend that. There were also many places to eat and relax there.
Valparaiso has gone downhill since last I visited, 7 years ago. Only five ascensores still running. People say pandemic/policies hit pretty hard economically but socially it seems affected as well. Still lots of great street art but more encroaching graffiti (infantile, egotistical, U.S. gang-style tags, etc.) and angry sloganeering (including pervasive "ACAB"--isn't that English?--and trans v. TERF sectarian in-fighting--I guess that's everywhere now). Don't remember so much obesity (tip: tattoos don't help!), dirt, litter, and dog poo or so many street vendors (not just artisans but lots of poor people selling household goods) and gambling dens. A bit of folkloric seediness, like in the wharf area, can be charming but too much can be a downer. Still a culturally vibrant city and beautiful if you get up into the hills.
Valparaíso is a city with a rich history, arquitecture and cultural life. The city has been severly damaged since the social uprising in 2019, and many areas on streets on the coast have not recovered (businesses closed). Viña del mar and Concon offer a more beachy and touristy daytrip from Valparaíso.
This hotel was the best we have stayed in during our 40+ years of traveling for both business and leisure. It is a charming setting with two of the most amazing and gracious hosts, Marcelle and Gloria, that you will ever meet. These people make the stay a special experience. The value of staying at the Manoir Atkinson cannot be overstated. The suite we had was spectacular. The breakfast was terrific, and the location was perfect for strolling the UNESCO highlights in the City of Valparaiso.
Valparaíso
Everything! The vibe was amazing. The place itself is adorable. The kitchen was decently equipped and clean. The bathrooms were clean and the shower water hot. The WiFi worked well. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. We were able to store our bags for a time before our night bus, this was very helpful. The system for storing was also super secure, better than most. The location was great, very close to the best parts of Valparaiso, we had no problems walking everywhere.
Valparaíso
Nice location situated closely to the touristic part of Valparaiso. A fine bar right down the hostel that offers some local beers (by the way their overview picture is out of date, the room nowadays contains the bar). The bar never was too loud for the sleeper above. A nice and quiet vibe in the hostel. Two cute petable house cats. Overall a good night sleep besides the one negative about the room. Bed sheets and floor were clean.
excellent location, friendly staff and very nice accommodation. we needed to work and the staff make it easy to us to get access to everything to take our calls con co fetén es from there. short distance to restaurants in the area. but check the restaurant of the hotel. that is probably the best restaurant in the city!
Valparaíso
This was a gem in middle Valparaiso. Perhaps not closer to many restaurants and bars, but that makes it really peaceful. The bungalow was perfect, well equipped, although the view was covered by trees... anyway you can walk a few steps and the view from the shared terrace is great! The personnel was very attentive.
A comfortable, quiet, very clean boutique hotel. The entire staff are outstanding. They are very friendly, helpful, and accommodating, especially to English speakers. The included breakfast was very fresh and more than adequate.
Valparaíso
Nice hotels in the hills of Valparaíso. Just a 5 min walk to the city centre. I liked the dorm style because you have a small cabin for yourself, locker and power outlets with every bed. Staff was friendly and hostel clean.
Everything was perfect, the owners and the staff were fantastic. Exceeded our expectations!!! I will recommend this boutique hotel to anyone traveling to Valparaiso. Thank you for an unforgettable New Year's Eve!
Valparaíso
One of the best hostels during my stay in Chile. Very friendly host and easy check in. I was able to park my car next to the house behind the fence. Very nice room with a good design and a good view. Clean and quite.
best hotel in Valparaiso, pay up for the top floor room with ocean view as the view is so worth it and you won’t need to go to any of the restaurants that boast great views. Lovely breakfast and Pilar is great!
location was great. staff very helpful. the hotel is historic and atmospheric. I loved this place. old world charm; hard wood floors, antiques. views!!!
Beautiful artsy design, great view from the Valparaíso bay
