Xian is nothing like the smoggy city I had experienced 18 yrs ago. it's changed just like the rest of china and the change in Xian is a positive one. though the disappearance of the local market is quite pity. we really had to stubbornly walk through the touristy market and eventually find the authentic local one which offers good food and fruit n vegetables at reasonable cost. we all come here mainly to see the terra kota army, but there's a lot more to do here. if u are a meat eater, don't miss the lovely shawarmas and the lamb kebabs. do go to enjoy the "LIGHT BALLET" at the giant goose pagoda every night at 21:00. try to arrive early to catch a better place in front. pay a visit to the great Mosque. I just loved the amazing combination of the traditional Chinese architecture with the Islamic scriptures. and before picking a place to stay do pay a visit to the Hang Tang Inn which offers both dorm beds and double rooms in an lovely environment for a very reasonable price!
We visited the south gate to walk the city walls and visited the Muslim quarter in the same night. Both were great experiences and within walking distance to our hotel. We even stopped at Dary Queen in between for a blizzard. We had a great dinner in the lively Muslim quarter and the under ground tunnels and metro were easy to navigate. Of course the terra cotta warriors were spactular to see. We cought a bus from the city and then back to our hotel fairly easily.
Xi'an was interesting. Compared to the hustle of Beijing, where I'd just been before, it was a welcome chill. There is a lot of construction and high-rises everywhere, but there didn't seem to be the same number of cars on the road that might warrant all that living space. The "New District" which is where I stayed seems to be either getting a facelift, or was created specifically for the hotels in the area, I'm not sure which. Either way, with a small mall, Starbucks, Pizza Hut, and plenty of well-lit walking areas, it was a lovely area.
Riding bikes on the wall was a highlight. Walking around the muslim quarter and trying all the different types of food was a great experience. The Army of Terra-cotta warriors was also an amazing sight to see. Found a great little restaurant called Shaanxi Alley near our hotel. Great food and nice decor.
Xian had some great street food areas. Loved our trip to the terracotta warriors which we did on the public bus, it was great fun and and really easy to do and was a great experience. The city wall is also fantastic, you can walk round are hire a bike, it's a lovely view of the city and would recommend you do it around 4pm and take your time because you see it in the light then you will see it when all the lights come on and it look beautiful.
The warriors, city walls and towers are an obvious must see and do. We could have done Hauqing Hot Spring but did not have the time. Take the local bus, early, to Lintong as it is cheap and frequent. Stop off on the way back at the hot springs. We managed to do just the cable car, up and down, which was all we had time for. The street at the Drum Tower is vibrant with music, food and great atmosphere, this is known locally as Muslim Street. The warriors are impressive but hall 2 was a little disappointing. Sign posts for the halls could be more pronounced. We walked the whole way round the city walls, it was 8.5 miles and took us about 5 hours. There are no stalls on the walls, but you can get a drink where you rent the bicycles.
The location of the hotel is walking distance to many attractions. The restaurant in the hotel was extremely accomodating and flexible in making vegetarian dishes for us. The high tea was such a pleasant bonus. The rooms are clean and modern. The staffs are very friendly and helpful.
Excellent location within City walls Good breakfast with both Asian and European choices.
