Asuncion, Escazu, and Barrio Escalante are popular with other travelers visiting San José.
I have been coming to Costa Rica for vacations and to visit relatives for 25 years. My daughter lives in the San Pedro area of San Jose. This visit was to look for an apartment that I would want to live in as I plan to move here in several months. San Jose isn't for everyone's taste. It is a capital city so it is crowded, busy and areas can be unsafe as in any big city in the world. It has some very interesting museums and venues. Most visitors use San Jose as an access location to the rest of this beautiful and interesting country. Many tour operators will pick you up at a San Jose area hotel or you can find car rentals and public transportation from the city. My favorite areas around San Jose to spend time are Escalante and Escazu.
San Jose is good as a central base for seeing national parks, and wildlife refuges. If you are here for a beach vacation, I would stay closer to the Pacific Coast. San Jose is a bit far from the beach.
People, food, city was excellent. Life is so relaxed. Everything is closed by 8. Some tourist spots close by 4, which was very unusual for me going from New York city. We arrived on good Friday, half of the city was closed because of holy weekend, until Sunday. We drove around the city and drove through mountains to La Fortuna, which was full of nature and adventure.
If you visit the city during Easter, it is OK - there are almost no people and you can see quite nice city center. Otherwise it's like another big city in Latin America - busy, dirty, crowded. All in all, in the city center a lot of streets smell by pee and rubbish, there are a lot of homeless laying on the ground and there is a lot of litter in the streets. Public parks are well maintained.
We stayed in San Jose on our way to Uvita, driving the day after we arrived. The City is pretty but feels unsafe. We enjoyed staying on the coast! Next time I would not spend time in San Jose and fly in a small airplane directly to the coast, not driving and not staying in the city area.
Our second trip to Costa Rica, you can always expect a rough start to your vacation. Airport is very small and hectic, Then you have to navigate through San Jose, with construction and crazy drivers (motorcycles darting every which direction) can be frustrating if you are heading out of town or coming into town. San Jose has a lot of things to see but like any larger cities you also need to pay attention to your surroundings mostly due to theft. Renting a car is fairly painful as well, cars with bald tires and no plugin for your cell phone you know you are in America. They will hit you with the your insurance you took does not work in our country so expect to pay a few hundred for mandatory insurance and up to $950 hold on your credit card. We have traveled over 500 miles in Costa Rica in 2 trips and can tell you its not for the faint of heart, roads can be very scary at times, a road with 50 miles of 2 line roads that for some reason only have 1 lane for all overpasses. Better get yourself a 6 cylinder car roads have many ups and downs and a small 4 cylinder struggles as we found out the hard way. Getting our of San Jose towards the Pacific is not fun for the first 100 miles, secondary horrible construction filled roads will test your patience in every way. Then the last 60 miles as you head towards Liberia you have a actually read highway and goes much better towards the coast. Gas around $8 a gallon and full service only, We only used our CC and brought $400 in 5s to tip everyone and worked out just fine. Beautiful country but very rough infrastructure and expect to take 3 hours for a typical 1 hour drive.
San José
I really like this little Hotel. It is clean, charming and has personality. The room was small but comfy and very reasonably priced. It is about a 15 minute walk to the downtown, the pedestrian shopping streets and some historic sites of San Jose. There are a few local eateries within a short walk. The breakfast is simple and the coffee is good. Guests have the use of the kitchen and the big fridge. All the staff were warm, helpful and friendly. I would stay here again for sure.
I stayed at Studio Hotel Boutique as a stopover in San Jose before travelling around Costa Rica. The hotel was very nice and staff were incredibly friendly/ supportive in answering questions and booking additional travel for us. I used the hotel's gym and had a great breakfast. The hotel is more luxurious than it even looks in the pictures and a friendly concierge recommended a local restaurant for us to have our first typical Costa Rican dish of the trip!
San José
Location, location, location. Staff can take care of any transportation, travel, or tour needs. Walking distance to all downtown attractions. Museums, China Town, grocery stores, pedestrian walkways, and restaurants. Note: excellent Peruvian restaurant a couple of doors down from the MasXMenos grocery store. (across the street from the Jade Museum) . 1/2 price of comparable restaurants. Hotel breakfast? Many Costa Rican dishes.
Very beautiful, elegant and cozy decor. Room with good Wi-Fi and safe. Also quiet. It has a beautiful and cozy garden with a fountain. Good gym for my needs. Jacuzzi for guests. Excellent restaurant with French Costa Rican fusion food. Efficient staff. Location: the neighborhood where the hotel is located is good, but a little far from attractions. A 20 minute walk or a cheap $3 Uber to downtown. So location OK
Lovely stylish hotel in a perfect location in downtown San Jose. Excellent restaurant, fabulously comfortable beds, spacious rooms, helpful staff. Nothing to dislike except that I arrived at the moment a pandemic lockdown had begun, so everything else was closed. I was glad that I had such a pleasing place to stay—a large bright room with great city views—before leaving the next day for other regions.
A very stylish and character-filled hotel in a very good location to get to museums and downtown etc.. We loved that is was a unique experience in terms of the traditional style. The hot tub with slide to the pool was fun. The staff, including the manager/owner were very helpful and went out of their way to get us to the airport when our first ride failed to show.
This hotel is a true oasis in the hustle and bustle of a major commercial area within the greater San Jose area. Pandemic procedures were followed and every effort was made to make them as non-invasive as possible. They also have a great breakfast and a great restaurant called Sangria and a Denny's for those missing mass produced food. Tico culture at its best!
Fleur de Lys is in a charming Victorian house that has been converted to a hotel. It is located in downtown San Jose within easy walking distance to museums and shops. The staff was very pleasant and helpful and the room was of ample size with a nice bathroom. There is a bar and restaurant as well with indoor and outdoor seating where I had a delicious dinner.
we booked the hotel at the start and end of our travels and for that, it was perfect. It gave us a good opportunity to just arrive in Costa Rica and organize ourselves. The breakfast was really good and the first room we had very comfortable. Even though it is near San jose and in a city, it is a little bit secluded and has nature surrounding it.
Location for this hotel is great. It's in the heart of Barrio Escalante which is the best area in San Jose. it's got many great restaurants and shops and easy, safe walking areas. It's a very basic hotel, but the price reflects that.
I had to spend one night in San Jose and this hotel is really is perfect very close to major bus station, two amazing restaurants across the street. Downtown is like 3 min walk.. clean, nice staff and delicious breakfast.
It was handy for a 1 night stay in San Jose before an adventure into Costa Rica and the room was spacious and the breakfast and pool area lovely.
The facility was very clean and decent and it was an ideal location. I love the convenience of walking to downtown San Jose
Beautiful, centrally located in downtown San Jose and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful
the location is on San Jose’s downtown so they are close to most of the restaurants and bars
Located right on the pedestrian mall in downtown San Jose, near the National Theatre.
Great location in this new modern hotel. Best deal going in downtown San Jose.
great location the staff was very kind and for this price you cant get any better
