Hotel Villa los Candiles features an outdoor swimming pool, gardens and non-smoking facilities. Free Wi-Fi is also available. Everything was exceptional! The staff provided the best service out of all the hotels we stayed at in Costa Rica. Gerardo the bartender/server of the restaurant, was completely attentive and even brought us a complementary appetizer while we were enjoying some local cocktails he had recommended (delicious by the way). The food was amazing, and well priced at the restaurant. The woman at the front desk took care of all of our needs within a very short time frame, and walked us directly to our room. She drew up a small map of the nearby towns for us so we could find our way around too. Would definitely visit this hotel again!

Positives: there are some interesting sights, like the Mercado Central and the National Museum. There are several other museums which sound interesting, like the Jade Museum. I like some of the pedestrian streets in the central area of the city, I like the energy and the crowds (yet the area doesn't feel just packed to me). In these areas there are some pretty good coffee shops and restaurants (though still not a ton). There are interesting, fairly atmospheric neighborhoods (well, Barrio Otoya, at least, though you could possibly say that of Barrio Amon, to a degree), which has some nice architecture, feels quieter yet seems to have some nice cafes. I got the sense that you needed to keep an eye on your belongings when you're in the central area (you see Costa Ricans walking around with their backpacks on their chest, which gives you a sense that they feel that way, too). But at least in the central areas, San Jose didn't feel outright dangerous to me. And from many points of the city you can see attractive mountains in the distance. Negatives: San Jose is at least a bit dirty. While you do see some attractive architecture, generally this isn't a very attractive city (though not the ugliest I've seen). I got asked for money more often that I liked.
A great country and best for dental tourism......excellent doctors and service at NEWSMILE....TELL THEM THAT DR. LEYBA HAS RECOMMENDED THEM. I HAD A FULL MOUTH RESTORATION AND HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED. I HAVE BEEN TO SAN JOSE SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN......NO PROBLEMS WITH MY TEETH FOR OVER 5 YEARS NOW...the dental work is warranted for life! Hotels, side trips, beaches and volcanoes are great.
Didn’t really hear many good things about the city but gave it a try. Nice parks and interesting history. I took a free walking tour and learned some things about San José I really enjoyed. Really nice and helpful people. There are quite a few homeless people and beggars.
Taxi drivers are scam artists. Stay within areas of the city with lots of police presence. Get a bus from the airport directly to Jaco or Manual Antonio. These are very nice towns. Spend as little time as possible in San Jose.
I enjoyed renting a car and driving trough the cities. I wanted to visit this Costa Rica for peace. The main saying Pura Vida means pure life. The people here live by that standard. It's amazing! The waterfalls near La Clandestina (restaurant) Paquera & hot springs in Orosi such beauties!!
San Jose was last 1.5 day stay in our 8 night trip in Costa Rica. So we just relaxed after volcanoes, waterfalls & beaches. San Jose is not a place for diving if you do not like spending hours in traffic.

I did not know that this was a hostel when I booked it for my family. We were worried but we couldn’t have been happier. This is a beautifully decorated and comfortable home! They even had a PlayStation which my kids went crazy for. There is a garage where we were able to park our car. It’s in a foodie neighborhood with tons of hip restaurants but you can take a long walk to downtown San Jose and the Mercado. We were told San Jose was a dump but we were pleasantly surprised with the art and culture.

Well located in the middle of what appeared to be the main busy street in San José. Decent sized rooms which despite being dated were also very clean. Beds were comfortable too. Breakfast was good, we had gallo pinto (eggs, rice and beans, plantain) everywhere in Costa Rica and this was one of the tastiest. If that doesn't excite you they had other items on offer too for an extra cost. The breakfast staff were very helpful in dealing with our dietary requirements!

The staff were amazing and the most helpful I have had helping me plan multiple day trips from San Jose. They even packaged me a breakfast to go on the days I was leaving early. The price for what you get is a bargain especially comparing to other places I have stayed in Costa Rica. The breakfast was lovely and substantial and there is plenty of social space. The first properly hot showers I have been to which was a luxury before I headed back from my month long trip.

Beautiful facility with interesting modern art. Room was well-appointed, modern, and comfortable! A great value...was half the price of other hotels! Manager allowed us to leave our car in secure lot after checkout so we could explore downtown museums on foot. Pura vida y muchas gracias! Breakfast was delicious and varied with something for everyone.

Both restaurants make great food. The place has a pool, jacuzzi and a small cardio gym area. The staff is amazing. Rooms are clean. If you leave the hotel and make a left and then another left at the intersection and walk straight you will be inside San Jose downtown in less than 10 min walk. Greet place. I loved my stuff and will be back soon

The Barceló es a wonderful surprise. It is close to downtown San Jose and to our dentist's office while the grounds seem to be in the middle of the rainforest. The room was clean, comfortable and roomy. The food was very good with an amazing choice of breakfast food. And the airport shuttle was efficient. We couldn't ask for more.
