The Jewel Box

Known as the 'Jewel Box', Dresden is a stunning German city with rich history, an important classical music scene, and an unforgettable Baroque and Rococo-inspired city centre.

Located on the banks of the Elbe River, the whole city was destroyed during World War II, but has now been rebuilt into one of the most interesting places in Europe. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) is an imposing building that is one of the most beloved symbols of the city.

Magnificent Zwinger Palace is the main Dresden attraction, featuring impressive pavilions and a majestic garden in the middle. Continue your journey along the cultural centre of Germany and visit the picturesque Baroque square of Neumarkt. Also not to be missed is Brühl Terrace, a promenade nicknamed the 'Balcony of Europe', because of its excellent view of the River Elbe.

Dresden is a great place to visit and normally 3 days would be enough. I stayed for 5 and started with Hop on Hop Off on Day 1 to get bearings, one day in Goerlitz (you can walk over to Poland, especially cheaper fuel by 20c per litre), a day trip to Meissen and in evening took the Steamer boat trip up the river (2.5 hr one way and 30 mins back - highly recommended but eat before as food on board nothing special), and a trip to VW Museum

Dresden is a lovely small city with an excellent tram system to get around easily. Wonderful palace to explore, and several very worth while museums. Add, to that opera, and dance. A delightful place.

Dresden lost its character, some areas actually remind one...

Dresden lost its character, some areas actually remind one of slums and being uncared for, which should not been tolerated by the Town Fathers as inviting the world to visit. Areas streets, houses, house entries completely covered in graffiti makes one very uncomfortable. Known Dresden 1954 and again after the Frauenkirche has been rebuilt mostly by volunteers and donations by its people. As Dresden has been almost completely wiped out by World War II bombing, its cultural heritage destroyed and now it seems that younger generations don't seem to care for history more. Unfortunately, our travel weather had been against us. Planned to sit at the Terrasses at the Elbe, however we managed for a wonderful Cheese plate lunch at Pfund's.

I traveled to Dresden in the morning, spent the night, and left the next evening. Looking back, I think Dresden is an excellent day trip -- that is, get there early in the day and leave in the evening. I wouldn't recommend staying the night. This is my view because I mostly enjoy architecture and absorbing the ambience of the place. Because Dresden's old town is rather small and compact, I believe this could be done in a day. I might have a different view if I wanted to explore museums, which might overflow a single day.

The city center is beautiful.

The city center is beautiful. There are many places to visit - the Frauenkirche, which rose from the ashes, the Residenzschloss, the Hofkirche, Brühl's Terrace, the Zwinger, parks, etc. However, some of the modern buildings in the city center are a bit distracting.

Dresden is probably my favourite place in Germany now. The city has been faithfully restored in loving detail, with even some of the stones from the destroyed buildings put back in their proper place. The old city is wonderful with so many great places to visit, churches, museums etc. We were very lucky to see the Maibaum Festival. What a treat. Dresden is filled with good restaurants and bars too, although my little winge is that we couldn't find a decent coffee, even in an Italian place. Someone could make a killing with a great coffee machine, properly roasted beans, and a barista. I'd do it myself but I'm too old.

I chose this hotel right in the heart of Dresden’s Altstadt. The hotel faces some of the most beautiful sights of the Old Town and is very convenient for getting around. The parking fee is €45, but in return, the hotel staff will drive your car to the garage and bring it back for you — you just need to sit and wait. Everything was excellent. The hotel lobby and the overall atmosphere made me feel comfortable and relaxed after a long day of exploring. This is one of my favorite hotels to stay at when visiting Dresden.

The hotel exceeded expectations. There are a spacious paid parking at hotel's backyard, costs for 24 hours only 6 euro. The room was small but cozy, all facilities are available. Good breakfast. Extremely friendly staff. We enjoyed our stay in Dresden. Also perfect location! The hotel is located at the opposite side of the mall street - couple of big malls and shops are nearby. City centre by foot about 10-15 minutes. All good! 👍🏼

Nice and clean room, helpful staff. Located 2 kms away from Dresden central stationin a very quiet area, bus stop next to the hotel (bus n.62 - 10 mins to Prager Strasser stop in the city centre). The hotel is located in a quiet area, very close to Lidl that works till 21:00 and to Neustadt-Dresden train station. The city centre is reachable with a tram or S-Bahn. The room looked clean, it had a fridge and a very soft and comfortable bed. The staff at the reception desk were helpful and friendly with us.
