Many families visiting Frankfurt Oder loved staying at Palais am Kleistpark, City Residence Hotel Frankfurt Oder Bahnhof, and Hotel Frankfurt-Oder Zur Alten Oder.
The city center is not very exciting - but it is worthwhile to take a look. However, the city was the home of one of the most important German writers: Heinrich von Kleist. Moreover, the city has a good concert hall and an excellent university. Since this city got separated after World War II between Germany and Poland you can experience here the new and peaceful cooperation between Germans and Poles and the spirit of Europe. It is also worthwhile to walk a bit on the banks of the river Oder and to experience the parks there.
Visiting Frankfurt/Oder makes you think about its history and its present. It has improved since my last visit a few years ago. No longer the many unoccupied shops but probably some depopulation. The few remaining ancient buildings (rathaus, cathedral etc.) are probably heavily restored. The generality is DDR or later. The hotel did recommend what turned out to be a good restaurant (Am Kleistpark) which I certainly enjoyed
Frankfurt Oder is a nice and fantastic town in Brandenburg, Germany, located on the Oder River, on the German-Polish border directly opposite the town of Słubice, You will enjoy if you visit the city and the friendly and opened minded people of Frankfurt Oder. Best Regards Bromand Abasy
I liked the old town of Frankfurt with its town hall in the style of the Hanse and the impressing St. Marien church and its beautiful stained windows. The landscape around the Oder river is very nice for walking and hiking. It is interesting to stay close to Poland and by crossing the bridge over the Oder you can experience another country. We did a trip from Slubice to Drezdenko and had a wonderful meal in the the hotel there. I admired the Viadrina University buildings and its idea very much too.
Small town with good public transport system. I was there for a conference at the university, and the university is lovely - many historic buildings, plenty of international students, and good choice of departments. We walked along the river into Slubice, Poland and ate dinner there. No border guards, no questions.
It is a quiet city, and the population has declined each year since the fall of the Berlin Wall, so a lot of the city does look as if it is suffering an economic downturn. This as it may be - and I don't know enough about the socio-economic background of the area - it is actually on the up. The city is small enough to walk around in a day, and then explore further on subsequent days. As with most of Germany, don't expect much to be open on Sundays, or after 4pm on Saturdays, except the bars. Helene-see is a 25 minute bus ride. These lakes are one of Germany's best-kept secrets, so I won't tell you anything else, you'll have to look it up!
